Building A Strong Public Health Care System

Building an Affordable Health Care System

With a rapid population growth, as seen in African countries, arises the need for high quality public healthcare that can serve all parts of the country. With a limited number of doctors, healthcare practitioners and nurses, who are on the front line of medical care provision, efficient management of resources becomes crucial in developing a sustainable national public health care programme that can adequately cover the largest number of patients at the lowest possible cost.

While international investors, healthcare equipment manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies are increasingly becoming aware of the business potential offered by the African market, the need for specialised personnel to manage available resources increases. According to the Financial Times, by 2022, healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa will be needing investments totaling more than 25 billion USD in physical assets alone, such as hospitals and clinics.

Highly specialised professionals are needed with the ability to actively shape the public healthcare sector of their country, with the insights of negotiating, planning, implementing and evaluating policy skills and practice initiatives required to transform a partially paralysed public health authority into a sustainable organisation that can care for a majority of the population.

The University of South Wales (USW) MSc Public Health programme nurtures its students to become a link between the medical staff, decision making government authorities and pharmaceutical companies, thus leading to a change in public healthcare policies.

USW, in cooperation with UNICAF, is now offering this innovative programme to students across Africa through UNICAF’s state-of-the-art Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), with an up to 80% scholarship. This approach enables students to actively forge connections with peers already during their studies and to actively seek and acquire the latest knowledge and critical thinking in the public health sector.
