Job Description

BASED AT: Karibuni Eco-Cottages, Ndhiwa

REPORTS TO: NCEDP Board of Trustees and Team Kenya Project Manager

CONSULTING WITH: Education Manager during first month as part of induction

RESPONSIBLE FOR: income generation activities at Karibuni Eco-Cottages and other income generating agricultural activities, School Business Farms, community agricultural training and beekeeping, school water projects and women’s groups.


  • To lead and manage the implementation of enterprise activities including all demonstration farms, activities at Karibuni Eco-Cottages (accommodation, groundnut processing, beekeeping, souvenir sales) to maximise the income generated, which will be reinvested into the local community
  • To implement enterprise-related project activities at partner schools on behalf of NCEDP including:
    • The design, implementation and management of School Business Farms, including ensuring that training is given to school partners to ensure that they can successfully manage School Business Farms in the medium to long term
    • The installation of rainwater harvesting and water filtration systems at partner schools, including providing any training to school partners to ensure that they can complete routine maintenance
    • The development of women’s groups, comprising of mothers and female guardians of vulnerable girls at partner schools
    • The provision of agricultural training and beekeeping training to women’s groups
  • To produce operational and business plans for all above areas of responsibility, including planning expenditure and income
  • To provide a monthly report on progress relating to all above areas of responsibility, plus any further monitoring needs according to the requirements of project partners, external donors and for NCEDP Board of Trustees to meet legal requirements
  • To keep up to date budgets on planned expenditure and to keep thorough records of all expenditure
  • To market and sell agricultural produce, Karibuni products and services and to suggest and develop new revenue streams
  • To ensure that Karibuni, NCEDP and any project partners are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders, and actively advocate for ongoing projects in the local community
  • To submit grant applications to acquire funding to cover project and core costs
  • To mobilise resources from local, national and international sources where applicable, including financial resources, labour, materials and technical assistance
  • To liaise with other local government and NGOs working in the area such as the Agriculture Office and to develop linkages with these and other appropriate organisations
  • To manage and support staff to ensure good working practices and good rolemodelling in all aspects of the project
  • To demonstrate good financial management to ensure efficiency and value for money in all activities, including developing budgets, paying invoices, authorising expenses and ensuring that adequate records are kept
  • To carry out staff training and appraisals, and deal with problems that may arise, keeping the board of trustees informed and involved in finding solutions
  • To carry out any other reasonable tasks as requested by the NCEDP Board and Team Kenya staff and trustees


We are seeking someone with the following skills / experience:


  • Qualifications at degree / diploma level in Business / Management or a related discipline
  • Significant leadership / management experience
  • Good levels of literacy and numeracy
  • Good IT skills, including confidence with
  • Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to relate to a wide range of people, from international visitors, to community leaders, to local community members
  • Ability to manage work colleagues and deal with problems that may arise
  • Ability to inspire, encourage and give confidence to work colleagues and community members
  • Efficient, well-organised, able to plan ahead, foresee and pre-empt issues / problems
  • Willingness and ability to be flexible
  • Reliability, honesty and integrity. A strong role model


  • Significant experience of managing work colleagues
  • Experience of working with a wide range of people; knowledge of the local community


Salary: Negotiable depending on experience and qualifications

Working hours: This is a full-time position. The post-holder will be expected to work 40 hours per week, but hours may need to be flexible if there are occasional evening or weekend commitments.

Length of contract: The successful applicant will initially be appointed on a six month probationary contract. On successful completion of the probationary period, the job description and contract will be confirmed.
