ASSISTANTS JOB IN MERU AND NAKURU COUNTIES
The Eastern Africa Farmers Federation, EAFF, (www.eaffu.org ) is a regional Farmers
Organization covering 10 countries in the East Africa Community and the Horn of
Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, DR Congo,
Djibouti, Eritrea and South Sudan. The Federation's membership consists of 24
National Farmer Organizations and Co-operatives with about 20 million
small-scale farmers involved in crop and animal husbandry. EAFF is registered under
the societies act in Kenya. The Federation is currently delivering services to
her members on the basis of 2013-2020Strategic Plan whose focus is
entrepreneurship through organization of farmers into units that can
participate in profitable agribusiness ventures. The strategy has four main
components namely warehousing, inputs, and agriculture extension and value
addition. Over the last three years EAFF has been able to roll out her
agribusiness strategy that centers on making smallholder’s farmer’s key value
Background of the work
Since October 2016, EAFF is implementing a project called
‘’e-Granary, uplifting smallholder farmers by access to markets and credit’’
funded by Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa ( GR ) through her continental
program ‘Financial Inclusion for Smallholder Farmers in Africa Project (FISF
P)’. The overall goal of the project is to improve the living standard of
smallholder farmers in Kenya by increasing incomes through financial
inclusivity. The assumption is that by addressing issues of market and credit
access, the project is bound to create instant transformation on the ability of
the farmer to improve productivity, income and livelihoods. EAFF developed
e-Granary which is an electronic service by farmers and for farmers which uses
the USSD mobile technology. Its objective is to collect information on farmer’s
bio data, geographic location of farmers and their farms, type of crop they
grow, amount of seeds they have planted in a particular season and the harvest
they achieve per season. EAFF uses this information provided by farmers to link
farmers directly to potential buyers of their produce, get farmer's production
history for the agricultural credit access, access to agricultural
mechanization, E- extension, e-Insurance, access to quality inputs at
reasonable prices and to inform policy intervention at national and regional
levels. The membership to the eGranary is EAFF National Farmer Organizations,
cooperatives, groups and agribusiness units. In Kenya, the USSD code is *492#
and can be used in both Safaricom and Airtel mobile platforms.
