Role summary
The job holder’s main role will be to support the legal department in ensuring the company’s continued corporate governance, licencing compliance, negotiation of contracts, and liaising with regulators. The incumbent should have a strong corporate law background in the region focused on cross-border transactions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Support the work of the Legal and Tax department
2. Carries out or assists in carrying out the legal assessment of suppliers, and provides legal support to the all departments in the company in the implementation of the legal and tax components of the business
3. Prepares or assists in the preparation of agreements with private entities, in accordance with the company’s principles of integrity, impartiality and independence
4. Provides legal advice on human resource matters
5. Reviews administrative matters
6. Provides legal advice to the Board of Directors
7. Provides or assists with the legal advice on procurement issues, reviews, comments and makes proposals on the relevant procurement contracts to be signed on behalf of the company
8. Conducts extensive legal research and analysis and prepares briefs, reports and correspondence
9. Undertakes basic or extensive review of legal documents, instruments, or other material as well as identifies important legal issues, inconsistencies, etc. and drafts comments and proposals
10. Prepares or assists in the preparation of agreements and contracts with the company’s partners and stakeholders
11. Supports the legal department in engagements with regulators
12. Provides guidance to more junior staff
13. Assists in the informal settlement of disputes and claims against the company, and supports the drafting of relevant settlement agreements and
14. Performs other related duties as assigned
Job Specifications
• A minimum of 3-4 years of progressively responsible experience in law
• Experience in a globally ranked law firm in Kenya
• Knowledge of, and ability to apply, legal principles, concepts and procedures and terminology for review, examination, and processing of a range of legal documents
• Ability to interpret and apply legislative instruments, develop and present results, recommendations, and opinions clearly and concisely
• Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results
• Supports achievement of the company’s vision and exemplifies the company’s mission
• Demonstrates initiative in identifying and proposing enhanced ways to advance team, group, agency and client interests
• Operates with a high degree of independence, but knows when to rely on own judgment and when to seek advice of supervisor and other team members
