Chief Accountant

Job Summary

We are a Nairobi-based hospital seeking to recruit for a Chief Accountant. The successful candidate will ensure the timely and accurate preparation of the daily, weekly and monthly financial information, annual audited accounts and annual budgets of the hospital for use by management.

Job Description/Requirements

REPORTS TO: CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Financial Reporting Roles

  • Responsible for preparation of the monthly management accounts reports, namely:
    • Income statements
    • Balance Sheet
    • Cashflow statement
    • Debtors aging analysis
    • Doctors aging analysis
    • Creditors aging analysis 
    • Bank Reconciliations
    • Supplier Reconciliations
    • Business volume statistics
    • Business Analysis
    • Performance Summary Report        
  • Preparation of various adhoc reports and analysis for management decision making. 
  • Responsible for the preparation of the monthly cash-flow projections and managing the cash-flow to meet the company’s priorities.
  • Circulate departmental performance to respective Heads of Department.

Accounting & Supervisory Roles:

  • Coordinating financial activities for the company including supervising staff and functions of the finance and procurement departments. 
  • Ensure adherence to various Standard Operating Systems (SOPs) in finance department. Ensuring that appropriate procedures and accounting systems are in place and are fully understood and complied with at all times.
  • Ensuring proper working of the financial reporting ERP and ensuring it provides correct and reliable financial information consistently.
  • Ensure timely and consistent completion of monthly closing procedures and sign off by Chief Accountant.
  • Ensuring accuracy or revenues reported on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
  • Ensuring all banks, m-pesa, credit card, petty cash and payable accounts are promptly reconciled and reviewed by Chief Accountant.
  • Ensuring existence of proper inventory management system and organizing for monthly and random stock counts and annual end of year stock take.
  • Maintaining fixed asset register for the company.
  • Supervising the updating of the general ledgers and other subsidiary ledgers, manage various reconciliations and analysis and approving any and all correction journals. 
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of Management Accounts reporting. 
  • Overseeing the preparation of monthly closing journals namely: accruals, provisions, payroll and depreciation, amortizations etc.

Auditing Roles:

  • Responsible for coordinating annual financial audits and ensuring timely preparation of the audit schedules and trial balance for audit purposes.
  • Responsible for the posting of adjustment journals as recommended by auditors.

Budgeting Roles:

  • Responsible for preparation of the company’s annual budgets i.e.:
    • Revenue and expenditure budget, 
    • Capital expenditure budget, 
    • Cash flow projections 
    • Balance Sheet projections
    • Monitor budget performance through comparing the actual performance with budget.
    • Circulate approved budgets to management and Heads of Department.

Compliance Roles

  • Ensure all applicable tax obligations are filed in accordance with the prevailing KRA requirements within the prescribed dates/timelines and ensuring no penalties are incurred.
  • Ensuring all statutory deductions are correctly filed as per requirements within the prescribed dates/timelines and ensuring no penalties are incurred.


QUALIFICATIONS AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES

  1. A bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting.
  2. ACCA or CPA Finalist.
  3. Minimum of seven (7) years in a Hospital finance department, 3 of which must be at a senior level.
  4. Experience in working with the accounting system. Experience with Med 360 ERP,  in particular will be an added advantage.
  5. Sound knowledge of corporate finance and accounting principles, laws and best practices.
  6. Sound knowledge of KRA and tax matters, as well as staying abreast of all relevant regulations.
  7. Good understanding of budgeting, financial analysis and forecasting.
  8. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  9. Leadership and management skills.
  10. People development skills.
  11. Financial planning and reporting skills.
  12. Proficient in the use of MS Office and accounting systems.
