Are you ready to embrace the power of law in the ever-flowing field of hydropower? We are on the lookout for a Legal Counsel (equipped with an LLB degree) who is ready to navigate the intricacies of contracts, regulations, and corporate compliance!
We are actively seeking candidates primarily from Kenya or Zimbabwe, acknowledging the potential complexities related to work permits in certain roles.
Our client has a noteworthy presence in the small hydro EPC sector, with a significant footprint in Africa. Since its establishment in 2003, they have commissioned over 15 hydropower plants exclusively in the expansive energy landscape. These plants collectively boast an impressive capacity exceeding 50MW, underscoring our clientâs substantial contribution to the energy sector in both Africa and South Asia.
As our ideal candidate, you are a seasoned and capable Legal Counsel who has demonstrated expertise in English Law and adeptness in handling legal matters within at least one African jurisdiction along with a track record of 4-6 years of experience in the renewable energy sector.
Your pivotal role as General Counsel will require you to provide strategic legal guidance to the organization, addressing legal matters across diverse African jurisdictions, English Law, and FIDIC contracts. You'll play a crucial part in steering the company through intricate legal landscapes, adeptly managing risk, and ensuring regulatory compliance. As the successful candidate, you are self-driven and capable of working independently. You are able to take initiative and ensure tasks are completed efficiently while ensuring adherence to strict deadlines and achievement of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Education Requirements
Successful completion of legal studies with a bachelorâs degree in law (LLB) or an equivalent qualification from a reputable international university Possession of pertinent legal certifications and admissions to the requisite bar jurisdictionExperience Requirements
A minimum of 4-6 years of experience in the hydro energy sector, highly beneficial, alternatively renewable energy or infrastructure sector, with a background in corporate law Proficiency in handling FIDIC contracts is essential In-depth knowledge of African and UK legal systems, regulations, and compliance requirements Showcased proficiency in offering strategic legal counsel and successfully leading legal initiativesResponsibilities
In the role of Legal Counsel, you will be tasked with developing and implementing an all-encompassing legal strategy that resonates with the business objectives of our client. This involves ensuring strict compliance with laws across a variety of African jurisdictions and English Law. Your concentrated efforts extend to overseeing organisational adherence in both the African countries of operation and the United Kingdom, with a pivotal emphasis on identifying, evaluating, and mitigating legal risks associated with business operations, contracts, and transactions.
Regarding the management of contracts, your active involvement will include engaging in the creation, examination, and negotiation of diverse agreements, ranging from investment agreements to commercial agreements and power agreements like PPA, EPC, O&M, and similar documents. Concurrently, you will supervise and manage legal disputes or litigation involving the company, working closely with external counsel when necessary. Your dedication will also involve offering guidance on matters of corporate governance, ensuring the seamless alignment of our company's legal structure with local and international regulations.
