Horticulturist

SUMMARY

This is responsible for para-professional work in the field of ornamental horticulture. Considerable independent judgment must be exercised by the employee with direction from a Horticulturist if needed. Work is performed under the general direction of a Horticulturist and reviewed upon completion.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides professional advice on the selection, ordering, planting, culture, and maintenance of trees, shrubs, ground covers, and turf grasses.
• Assists in planning and designing annual and perennial flower beds.
• Assists in the production of bedding plants, potted plants, and nursery stock and maintains records on the growing operation.
• Training and supervising subordinate personnel in the proper methods and techniques of planting ornamental plants.
• Trains grounds personnel in the techniques of pruning, wound dressing, cavity repair, and the cabling and bracing of trees and shrubs.
• Assists in preparing acquisitions for various types of plants and seeds.
• Assists in supervising the processing of accessioning deaccessioning, mapping, relocating, and labeling plants in collection areas.
• Assists in the preparation of maintenance programs for the control of plant diseases and insects.
• Assists in preparing fertilizer programs for various types of plants.
• Performs related duties as required.
