Position Overview:
In this role, you will provide legal advice and strategic counsel within a broad scope of areas including: HR policies and procedures; employment contracts; workers compensation; labour relations; dependent and independent contractor relationships; litigation management; privacy matters; digital applications with respect to employment matters; employee discipline; terminations of employment; employment standards; human rights; immigration, occupational health and safety.
Although the primary focus of this position will be focused on employment related matters, other duties and responsibilities may include advising on, and drafting and negotiating general commercial contracts, including vendor contracts, NDAs and those related to IT and digital products or services.
Key Responsibilities:
Advising the organisation on all legal matters that may arise in its operations through well drafted legal opinions;Â Drawing and vetting of contracts, agreements and other legal documents;Â Supporting Kenyan and Ugandan procurement; Negotiating for contracts; Development of budgets and workplans;Â Following up on cases filed against the organisation and preparation of legal reports and opinions;Â Undertaking legal research; Developing, implementing and reviewing legal policies and procedures to ensure that they are in accord with the existing legislation;Â Conducting training with various teams and acting as a point person regarding compliance with applicable policies; Coordinating the organisationâs complaint management system;Â Advising the organisation on the legislation that affect the organisation and changes made thereof;Â Monitoring compliance with legal and statutory requirements of the organisation;Â Providing necessary support in the executive function;Â Supporting government relations initiatives; Providing day to day legal and regulatory support to the functional areas covering general compliance queries and reviews; and Carry out any other duties as directed by the legal/ general counsel from time to time.Qualifications and Experience
Have a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized institution; Postgraduate Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law;Â Admission to the Roll of Advocates of the High Court of Kenya or Uganda;Â Be a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK);Â Possession of a current Law Practicing Certificate;Â 2-3 years experience in litigation (focus on Constitutional law, Employment law and Contract law); Experience in employment law, internal investigations or as ombudsman is a plus; Experience in research; Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing; Proficiency in Ms Office with emphasis on Ms Excel and Powerpoint; Experience in a busy law firm and/or Court Registry is an added advantage; and Training experience is an added advantage.About Sama
