Medical Officer with ICU Experience

Job Summary

To diagnose, manage, and deliver care of critically ill patients and provide life support or organ support system to patients who are critically ill.

Job Description

•    To examine all patients on admission in ICU/ casualty or other such clinical areas as designated from time to time.
•    To provide immediate first line airway management and resuscitation to any patient as required.
•    To manage the critically ill patients pre and post operative.
•    Use of emergency resuscitation equipment.
•    Demonstrate competency in Adult Basic & Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support [BLS/ACLS] skills and Advanced Trauma Life Support skills, [BLS/ ATLS].
•    To respond immediately to clinical emergencies within all departments in the hospital and lead the resuscitation team during emergency situations.
•    In an emergency situation, undertake emergency investigations and procedures in accordance with hospital policies and protocols.
•    Be competent with Tracheal intubations, intravenous and central line cannulation, defibrillation and cardioversion, providing emergency medication, providing resuscitation inclusive of pacing and pericardiocentesis and care for the patient post resuscitation.
•    Be present and contactable within the hospital at all times during periods of duty and to provide continuous service in conjunction with other medical practitioners across the 24 hour period.
•    Maintain detailed contemporaneous notes on all patients attended in accordance with best practice for record keeping.
•    Respond promptly to the request of medical staff and nursing staff to attend to any patient within the hospital, and to initiate or advise on treatment.
•    To prescribe medicines to take home in accordance with protocol.
•    Before going off duty, ensure an appropriate communication to the incoming medical practitioner specifying any ongoing requirements of individual patients.
•    See and examine discharged post operative patients.
•    In the event of the death of a patient, inform the Head- ICU, Medical Superintendent and the Unit Head.
•    Advise the Head- ICU and Medical Superintendent immediately of any patient who threatens to discharge themselves against medical advice.
•    Comply with the hospital’s consent and confidentiality policy.
•    Maintain comprehensive notes and treatment records of all patients attended.
•    Ensure correct procedures are carried out in respect of patients discharging themselves, deaths in care and coroner’s requirements.
•    To comply with hospital Health and Safety Policies at all times.
•    Have effective customer care and public relations in order to promote the good reputation of the hospital.
•    To stay in the ward areas at all times during duty hours except during lunch/ tea breaks. The time of break should be subject to patient condition in the ICU and approval from Head- ICU from time to time.
•    To take and give written handover at the bedside at the beginning and end of the duty shift.
•    To train nurses, paramedical and support staffs while on duty from time to time
•    Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
