- Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology from a recognized university.
- At least two (2) years of proven experience in a laboratory in a highly commercial food processing environment.
General description
The Microbiologist’s primary responsibility is collecting samples from production, preparing samples, and conducting specified tests according to standard protocols. This person would maintain sample traceability from production through final product result, report testing results, and request additional samples as needed while maintaining a clean and orderly environment.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Generate, analyze, and interpret microbiological data and reports.
- Lead calibration sessions for fresh shelf-life evaluation programs and basic microbiology techniques.
- Conduct quarterly training sessions on the collection of environmental swabs at all critical locations in the establishment.
- Conduct basic applied microbiology QC and pathogen testing procedures using standard and rapid detection technologies.
- Serve as a technical resource for the organization in the areas of microbiology, quality control, and shelf-life evaluation.
- Assist in evaluating and coming up with detection technologies.
- Collect and analyze daily/weekly pre-operational and/or operational environmental swabs at the establishment.
- Collect and analyze daily/weekly raw materials and finished product samples.
- Maintain daily, monthly, and quarterly certification records.
- Perform and follow Microbiology Quality Assurance and Quality Control protocols and procedures.
- Help with general laboratory preparation (microbiological media, sterilize scientific glassware, and preparation of standard solutions).
Skills Required
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office programs; Strong Excel skills, ability to create spreadsheets and databases with formulas, queries, and calculations.
- Strong knowledge of food microbiology and associated tests.
- Ability to make key decisions that impact the business along with great problem solving skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team member without direct supervision.
- Strong data entry and management skills required.
- Ability to interpret, analyze, and communicate quality/safety issues both internally and externally and initiate applicable corrective measures.
- Demonstrated passion and ability to train members in the areas of food safety/quality and sample collection.
- Strong communication skills required.
- Must be committed to continuous improvement.
