Laboratory technician should have more than 3 years of hands on experience of working in a commercial plant tissue culture laboratory from initiation to rooting of banana and bamboo. Position to be held in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.

As a team leader, to execute day-to-day tissue culture production activities and as a supervisor, to train, lead and supervise duties and responsibilities of the entire production team according to the Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Duties include but are not limited to preparation of chemical stocks and buffers and production of different media types according to weekly production plan; autoclave sterilization; clean and maintain laboratory equipments and materials according to manufacture standards and media preparation room according to cleaning schedules; develop, maintain and update the Media Preparation Service Manual and Quality Control and Standard Operating procedures in accordance with industry regulations; maintain media stock inventory and record keeping on stock/media prepared, sterilization, observations on contaminated media in the Quality Control Room, dispensed media to Transfer Room; evaluated performance of self and others; schedule staff and order supplies needed in the Media Preparation Room; research, develop and refine PTC protocols; stay current on developments in the PTC industry. Organize and conduct weekly workshops, presentations, and discussions on various related PTC topics within the laboratory. Perform analysis to obtain critical, valuable data on the production scale and performance of Plant Production, Media Preparation and Quality Control departments.
Individually and in teams, to regularly conduct desktop and practical research on cost- effective, improvement strategies within Media Preparation, Transfer Room and Growth Room departments. The technician will work and lead a team of operators and supervisors to ensure smooth and effective workflow. Core responsibilities of Transfer Room and Growth Room Management. In the Transfer Room- perform R&D and optimization of protocols for surface sterilization, initiation, high throughput axenic multiplication and rooting of various varieties of banana, bamboo, potato, cassava, pyrethrum, pineapple, teak and so on, using aseptic techniques. Research, develop, validate, improve and innovate tissue culture techniques of the mentioned crops. Maintain written Standard Operating Procedures for all activities performed in the Transfer Room, Growth Room and the entire laboratory. In the Growth Rooms- observe and record growth of plantlets and type of contaminants and percentage of discards. Identify contaminants using microbiology techniques, when required. Notify CSO of any unusual contaminations observed and when the contamination percentage is above threshold. Core responsibilities of Hardening Facility. To manage all activities of the hardening facility. This includes plant washing, transport to hardening facility, coco peat preparation, tray washing, planting of ex agar plants, providing optimum conditions for growth of both primary and secondary plants. R&D of hardening facility protocols for different plants. Stock recording of plants and minimizing losses.
Most importantly, to be “On Call” to respond to system alarms nights when needed. Hold a valid motorbike license within 1 month of employment and know how to ride a motorbike thoroughly.
