Location:         Nairobi Office & working from home - plus travel

Salary:             £45,000 - £50,000 per annum + benefits dependant on experience

Contract:         Fixed term – 2 years

Hours:             Full time 35 hours Monday - Friday

Job summary

 

Malaria No More UK’s mission is to catalyse and inspire the global partnerships, leadership, and financing to make malaria no more in a generation. We deliver ground-breaking mass communication and advocacy campaigns on behalf of the global malaria campaign. MNM UK is seeking to expand its efforts beyond the global stage to help galvanise and support national and regional efforts to drive attention, resources, and action to end malaria in Africa.  MNM UK will bring fresh impetus in Africa – with an initial focus on testing models for campaigns, communications, and advocacy in Kenya at the heart of the malaria fight.

 

The Africa Programme Manager is a role under MNM UK Africa workstream whose key responsibility will be to support the establishment of local, context-specific initiatives driven by local status and priorities.  The in-country engagement model includes working with local partners through sub-granting and capacity building that will see successful in-country advocacy mechanisms.

 

The Africa Programme Manager will contribute significantly to MNM UK's strategic Africa vision development and execution. S/he will support the identification, development and execution of strategic, context specific, advocacy and communications plans and activities, provide appropriate communications and advocacy advice and support to partners, support annual work planning for communications and advocacy and will be responsible for maintaining key partnerships. The role will drive cross-workstream coordination and play a key role in monitoring and learning initiatives.

 

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional communicator with good networking and external relation skills and able to manage activities in a rapidly changing environment. This creative and digitally able person will directly support Senior Communication and Advocacy Manager Africa with assigned financial, administrative and operational functions.

 

Key responsibilities 

 Primary responsibilities

 

Project Management and Operational support

 

§  Work closely with the Senior communication and advocacy manager to develop and implement workplans, budgets, and strategies for key workstream deliverables

§  Manage event planning for MNMUK supported functions

§  Support the organisation’s Monitoring and Evaluation leads to develop monitoring and evaluation activities of program interventions and oversee their implementation and reporting in the Africa workstream

§  Lead the delivery of high quality, timely, impact focused reporting for a range of stakeholders

§  Budget development, monitoring and management

§  Support MNMUK fundraising activities including proposal writing

§  Line management of the Africa Officer

 

Secondary responsibilities:

African Advocacy Activities

 

§  Work collaboratively with the Africa Director, team members located in Africa and the UK and key partners to achieve Africa workstream objectives and deliverables, including supporting strategic project planning for advocacy impact areas

§  Coordinate strong working partnerships with Ministries of Health, National Malaria Control Programs, Zero malaria campaign coalition partners, and international malaria partners - connecting in-country activities to regional and global communication and advocacy efforts

§  With colleagues, identify strategic moments and emerging opportunities to influence target stakeholders and support their integration to workstream plans and budgets

 

Communications

 

§  Support the communications team to design and develop roll-out plans for inspirational and contextually relevant communications campaigns

§  Work with the communications team to disseminate media distribution for campaigns, including mass media and community-based approaches while monitoring and expanding social media presence of MNMUK’s work and campaigns

§  Support and work with the Senior Africa communications and Talent Manager in the continuous engagement of local/national talent/champions

§  Develop strong relationships with relevant media and secure press coverage of events and campaign developments

 

Qualifications, skills and experience

 

Essential

 

§  Strong skills and experience in all aspects of program cycle management – design and development, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation

§  Demonstrated experience working with a range of stakeholders and partners

§  Demonstrated experience managing budgets and ensuring financial compliance with donor contracts

§  Demonstrated experience leading complex impact focused projects with multiple areas of work, tight timelines, and diverse internal and external stakeholders

§  Relevant experience in health advocacy and communications particularly in management of national and regional programmes.

 

Desirable

§  Lived malaria experience

§  Experience and technical knowledge in malaria and/or infectious disease programming

§  Experience working in Africa both regionally and in Kenya or Zambia

§  Knowledge of health policy and practice in Africa, especially in malaria

§  Strong leadership, communications, and interpersonal skills

§  A confident communicator – including excellent writing skills

§  Decision-making skills, taking initiative and follow up

§  Superior time management skills and ability to work in a complex environment with multiple and competing tasks

§  Team player with the ability to interact and communicate skilfully both internally and externally
