Job Description

Reports to:    Hospital matron                       
Division/Dept:    Division of Nursing Services   

1.    JOB PURPOSE   
•    To provide safe/competent/prompt nursing care to all patients
•    Strictly adhere to nursing council code of ethics and hospital policies
•    To minimize patients/clients’ experience
•    Prompt response for emergencies

2.    CRITICAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

KEY RESULT AREAS (KRA)


a.    Enhancing communication skills with patients/relatives/visitors which will minimize patients’ experience in the hospital

MAJOR ACTIVITIES

•    To implement nursing care plan for all inpatients
•    Observing and recording patients’ behavior.
•    Coordinating with physicians and other healthcare professionals for creating and    evaluating customized care plans.
•    In order to provide emotional and psychological support to the patients and their families, RNs create harmonious environment.
•    By obtaining data of patient’s condition/disease and analyzing patient’s symptoms
a.    Nursing diagnosis is formulated and expected outcome with the time frame written
b.    Priorities in management are listed
c.    Complications which can arise are listed
d.    Every planned action of the nursing care must be evidence based with scientific justification
e.    Patient evaluated after every four hours or more frequently as far as patient condition is concerned
•    Maintaining reports of patients’ medical histories, and monitoring changes in their   condition.
•    Carrying out the requisite treatments and medications.
•    Plays a modal team player and adheres to instructional protocols
•    Responsible for skilled and quality care of in-patients / casualty /maternity unit/ theatre and consultant services.
•    To assess the patients specific health problems/needs and to develop the day to day nursing care plan by consulting /coordinating with other health care team members and by implementing and evaluating the nursing care plan.

OUTCOME


•    To ensure all the documents related to nursing care are implemented and adhered to
•    Skilled  individual nursing  care

KEY RESULT AREAS (KRA)
b. To ensure proper care and maintenance of medical equipment in nursing department

MAJOR ACTIVITIES

•    To be conversant in operating the following equipment/ procedures:
1.    ECG
2.    Defibrillator
3.    Infusion pump
4.    Syringe pump
5.    Tocograph
6.    Cardiac monitors
7.    Continuous Digital blood pressure machines
8.    Nebulizers
9.    Defirrallator
To be able to clean, maintain and report any malfunctions on medical equipment

OUTCOME

To prevent any negligence due to malfunctioning of the equipment which is a liability

KEY RESULT AREAS (KRA)
c.Inventory control of all the surgical, ward equipment and linen in the ward

MAJOR ACTIVITIES

•    Will be responsible for checking and signing the departmental checklist when allocated the duty of a team leader
•    Will ensure the duties of a team leader are strictly adhered to and will be responsible for any delays in patient management
•    Will ensure that all the surgicals used/ procedures/consultants visits are logged in before reporting off
•    Will control pilferage of any equipment or surgicals in your custody

OUTCOME

To maintain/control medical equipment/surgicals in managing the patient care

KEY RESULT AREAS (KRA)
d.    To ensure infection control protocols are adhered to.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES

•    Strictly to adhere to infection control policies whilst providing patient care
•    Should be able to supervise and teach HCA on infection control while dusting, carbonizing the beds, sluice rooms
•    Should be able to prevent any hospital acquired infection
•       Ensure clean patient  linen and well ironed

e.Communication skills


MAJOR ACTIVITIES

•    To update him/herself through medical CME’s/trainings
•    To ensure professional communications with interdisciplinary committees and amongst the colleagues
•    Prompt response to patients’ inquiries and directing them to right personnel and prompt answering of action bells
•    Understand communication is basis of running any institution smoothly
•    When communicating with consultants to ensure the use of SBAR
•    self identification
•    To give per excellence performance as per team leader/team player where required

OUTCOME
To enhance in reducing the patients complains and providing conducive environment
