Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of , which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act . The Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Project Description:

KEMRI in collaboration with Clean Air (Africa) is seeking to employ one dedicated and proactive research field worker coordinator to be part of an established team to work on a multi-national Unit project in Kenya funded by NIHR CLEAN-Air (Africa) Global Health Research Unit between (-) which is also part of the Energy, Air Pollution and Health Research Group at the Department for Public Health, Policy and Systems, University of Liverpool The Unit’s Programme builds on substantial success of the CLEAN-Air (Africa) Global Health Research Group ( to : see and expands its geographical focus from Kenya to include Cameroon, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. CLEAN-AIR (Africa) Air Project is seeking to employ a highly motivated and skilled research Field Workers Coordinator to join our dynamic team focused on studying the complex interplay between air pollution, energy use, and human health

Duties and responsibilities:

Data collection: Supervise collection of data from the field on air pollution levels, emissions, and related environmental parameters using monitoring equipment and instruments. Surveys and interviews: Administer surveys and conduct interviews with individuals, communities, and stakeholders to gather information on perceptions, behaviors, and impacts related to air pollution and energy systems. Sample collection and analysis: Supervise collection of samples of air, soil, water, and other environmental media for laboratory analysis and assist in analyzing the collected samples as per established protocols. Site visits and inspections: Visit various sites, including industrial facilities, power plants, and residential areas, to assess pollution sources, emission controls, and compliance with environmental regulations. Data management: Record, organize, and manage field data using appropriate tools and technologies, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation. Equipment maintenance: Maintain and calibrate field equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition and adhering to safety protocols. Community engagement: Engage with local communities and stakeholders to raise awareness about air pollution, energy conservation, and health impacts, and foster collaboration for research and intervention activities. Team collaboration: Collaborate with researchers, scientists, and other field workers to coordinate field campaigns, share findings, and contribute to the overall research objectives. Coordinating data management on household air pollution from the counties Supporting piloting of digital platform for remote teaching and data collection for surveillance. Health and safety: Adhere to health and safety guidelines while working in the field, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety protocols. Reporting: Assist in preparing reports, summaries, and presentations of fieldwork findings, contributing to the overall research outputs and project deliverables.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Biomedical Sciences, Statistics, Public Health, Nutrition, Social Science, or a related field. M.Sc. Degree will be an added advantage Knowledge in fieldwork, data collection, or environmental monitoring is preferred. Knowledge of air pollution, energy use, and their impact on human health and the environment. Familiarity with fieldwork techniques, data collection methods, and sample handling procedures. Ability to operate monitoring equipment and instruments for data collection. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate data recording and management. Certificate of completion on air pollution, health, and prevention. Effective communication skills to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities. Flexibility and adaptability to work in various field settings and weather conditions. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating effectively with colleagues. Commitment to following health and safety protocols and guidelines. Any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal Investigator.

This is a full-time position that may involve travel to different field sites within the Nairobi. The position offers opportunities for professional growth and the chance to contribute to meaningful research and interventions in the field of air pollution, energy, and health.
