Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HiH EA) is a registered Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Kenya, established in 2010. As a member of the global Hand in Hand network, HiH EA operates with a mission to alleviate poverty by empowering marginalized communities through sustainable enterprise development. With 25 field offices across 33 counties in Kenya, the organization focuses on economic and social empowerment using a participatory approach.
HiH EA's model is rooted in the philosophy of self-help, providing training, skills, and support to enable individuals, particularly women and youth, to create and sustain market-based economic activities. This approach has led to the mobilization and training of over 354,000 members, resulting in the creation of over 334,000 enterprises and more than 452,000 jobs.
The organization's comprehensive enterprise development model includes seven training modules: group mobilization, savings mobilization, enterprise development, financial management, value chain development, credit access, and climate change resilience building. Additionally, HiH EA has established the Fanikisha program, a social entity aimed at connecting businesses directly to markets, thereby eliminating unscrupulous middlemen.
Beyond entrepreneurship, HiH EA's work encompasses thematic areas such as climate change resilience, advocacy and human rights, gender mainstreaming, regenerative agriculture, and the circular economy.
