Responsibilities:

Partners with the CEO, executive and global program leaders to develop strategies and short, medium, and long-range plans to support PATH’s mission. Partner with the President, aiding in fundraising responsibilities, navigating potential and existing donor relationships. Oversee the annual divisional business planning exercises to ensure that departments and individual program strategies are complementary and aligned with PATH’s overall vision, mission, and strategy; and can be realistically managed and funded. Partner closely with the Chief of Business and Financial Operations to improve operational effectiveness across product development teams and execute on the global operating model restructuring. Drive the identification and alignment on strategic priorities for investments in scientific innovation efforts and act as a strategic liaison with program leaders for efforts related to scientific innovation. Contribute to PATH-wide strategies and bringing a product development research and innovation orientation to cross-program strategies and measurement. Foster and supporting a culture of innovation and creativity to fully engage staff and partners in exploring, testing, commercializing, and advancing high-potential technological solutions to global health challenges. Develop strategies to bridge and build innovation and product and market development capacity in LMIC programs and partners. Foster strategic and functional linkages with PATH’s other global and country programs to ensure that technology development activities align with key global health needs and realities. Develop new and serves as executive-level relationship manager for existing partners. Participate and serve as PATH’s representative in discussions with global and regional stakeholders, including multilaterals, donors, governments, normative bodies, and other NGOs. Translate PATH’s strategies into a set of integrated Divisional objectives with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Act in the capacity as the Institutional Official for all regulatory and research compliance Lead strategic planning and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising program, including the development of a cohesive communications and robust principal and major gift fundraising strategies. Effectively manage a portfolio of top-level principal and major gift prospects. Build a case for philanthropic support of strategic priorities and design a clear go-forward plan with measurable success metrics for all key players within the Institution. Coordinate and implement diplomatic engagement and outreach strategies for advancing global health and health security activities

The CSO will be a key member of the Executive Team responsible for:

Playing a critical role on PATH’s Executive Team working with the CEO to develop PATH’s multi-year strategy refresh. Serving as a strategic partner and advisor to PATH CEO and the Executive Team on scientific and organizational issues, ensuring that scientific and product development perspectives inform leadership decision-making. Providing scientific leadership across PATH, forging strong strategic partnerships with PATH’s Executive Team to assure organizational success, and guiding program portfolios for maximum impact. Helping build PATH’s brand through showcasing capabilities and enhancing the broader markets’ knowledge and understanding of PATH’s accomplishments, capabilities, and innovations. Supporting PATH’s approach to organizational excellence by role-modeling quality and sustainable development improvements.

The CSO is responsible for strategic planning and priority setting for the Division. Working with Department leaders, the CSO will be responsible for:

Leading the divisional strategy and serving as an organizational representative with PATH donors and partners. Maintaining and strengthening relationships with external stakeholders, including thought leaders, collaborating NGOs, international organizations, bilaterals, private foundations, academic institutions, and the private sector. Providing insight and leadership to ensure appropriate coordination, collaboration, and partnerships with private sector partners (respect to underlying IP, R&D support, manufacturing, uptake, or commercialization). Leading by example, reinforcing appropriate behavior, and motivating the immediate team as well as senior leaders in the region. Ensuring that the organizational development approach is consistent with PATH values and management policies and guidelines, and that the Division is designed and managed to guarantee timely and cost-effective execution.

Required skills and experience:

MD or PhD in a life science discipline, with demonstrated scientific contributions to the field. Minimum of 20 years in a life sciences leadership role with progressive responsibility leading an organization’s scientific programs. Experience leading efforts within research institutes and/or pharma/biotech companies to develop products for infectious diseases that disproportionately affect citizens in LMICs. Deep scientific expertise in one or more disciplines relevant to global health. Demonstrated success in working with donors who invest in product research, development, and/or introduction approaches to global health challenges. Experience in leading cross-discipline strategies and projects that integrate commercial, public health, and technical domains. Demonstrated understanding of developing country health issues and markets in the global health architecture, within the context of successful product development, introduction, and scale. Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with a range of private and public-sector collaborators to achieve results. Proven ability to provide strategic direction and create a work environment that enables the organization to achieve results. Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including the ability to work under pressure, provide sound judgment, to inspire and lead people, enabling teamwork, collaboration, and excellent team performance, and sustain momentum.
