So, when should you start applying to study abroad? The answer is right now!
Except of course if you don’t mind missing out on the next admission intake, but if you do, it’s advisable to begin today. Now, that has been said, here are a few things you should put in mind as you prepare to apply.
1. University & Chosen Programme of Study
The first thing to do would be to decide on a university & programme of choice. We have a simple breakdown of how best to pick a suitable course and university here. You should plan to apply to more than one school, just to have more options to choose from.
2. Admission Intakes
Next would be to decide on what intake in the year you want to apply for, the number of intakes varies per school – January/February, June/July, September/October, and the most popular intake being the January/September due to the high number of courses available at that time.
As earlier mentioned, some courses have varying intakes within the year, for example- Nursing, Business & Entrepreneurial courses in some of our partner universities have intakes in January, March, May & September, and these intakes are usually highly competitive, so it’s important to put your best foot forward when applying.
3. Application Deadlines
Another thing to take note of is your application deadline, check your university’s website, ask your advisor, and start planning towards it. It’s also best to start applying 8 months before the resumption date.
4. Required Documents
Most universities would ask for the following documents- Degree Certificate, Transcript, Personal statement, KCSE results, IELTS/GMAT/GRE (if applicable), Resume, Reference letters, other certifications, etc.
However, if you haven’t gotten some of your documents, like your certificate, you can still go ahead to apply. The university can give you a conditional offer, pending the time you submit your complete documents to them.
It’s best to start getting your visa documentation ready (Tuberculosis test, bank statements, etc.) as you wait for an offer from the university. Remember, the sooner you get an offer from the university of your choice, the sooner you can start your travel plans.
