ARTISANS (MULTIPLE TRADES)
Position Title: Artisan (Specify Trade Specialty)
Department: Engineering, Infrastructure & Fleet Maintenance
Location: Mombasa
Reports To: Maintenance Foreman / Workshop Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary
These roles are critical for ensuring the structural integrity, operational safety, and aesthetic standards of our facility infrastructure, cargo handling zones, and transport fleet.
Core General Responsibilities
- Execute specialized trade-specific repairs and routine preventative maintenance across the depot, offices, workshop facilities, and transport fleet.
- Inspect structures, equipment, and assets to identify faults, wear, or damage, and implement cost-effective, long-term repair solutions.
- Strictly adhere to Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) regulations, ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and maintain clean, accident-free work bays.
- Collaborate with industrial technicians on complex multi-disciplinary overhauls and infrastructure development projects.
Specialized Trade Tracks (Candidates Must Select One)
1. Trade Specialty: Plumber
Core Focus & Specific Responsibilities: Installation, repair, and maintenance of high-pressure water supply lines, industrial drainage networks, wastewater systems, and workshop plumbing fixtures. Experience with industrial pumps and valves is essential.
2. Trade Specialty: Welder
Core Focus & Specific Responsibilities: Precision structural steel fabrication, modifications, and emergency repairs on heavy machinery chassis, container frames, and yard gates using ARC, MIG, or gas welding techniques. Skilled at reading technical drawings.
3. Trade Specialty: Painter
Core Focus & Specific Responsibilities: Surface preparation (sandblasting, rust scraping, chemical treatment) and application of industrial-grade marine anti-corrosive paints, primers, and protective coatings on heavy machinery, structures, and vehicle bodywork.
4. Trade Specialty: Carpenter
Core Focus & Specific Responsibilities: Fabricating, installing, and repairing wooden structures, concrete formwork, office cabinetry, specialized cargo crating, and wooden decking. Proficient in using heavy-duty woodworking machinery.
5. Trade Specialty: Rigger
Core Focus & Specific Responsibilities: Setting up, assembling, and inspecting heavy lifting tackle, slings, shackles, and chains. Directing complex lifting operations, calculating load weights, and securing center-of-gravity parameters with cranes.
6. Trade Specialty: Mason
Core Focus & Specific Responsibilities: Bricklaying, concrete mixing, plastering, floor screeding, and structural concrete repairs across yard pavements, retaining walls, drainage channels, and building foundations.
7. Trade Specialty: Electrical
Core Focus & Specific Responsibilities: Basic domestic and commercial wiring, troubleshooting lighting systems, fixing workshop power sockets, replacing faulty relays, and conducting basic electrical appliance maintenance under safety LOTO protocols.
8. Trade Specialty: Upholsterer
Core Focus & Specific Responsibilities: Repairing, recovering, and custom-fitting interior seats, cabin linings, and protective padding for heavy commercial trucks, utility cars, crane cabins, and specialized marine craft using industrial fabrics and leather.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent vocational training certificate.
- Valid National Trade Test Certificate (Government Trade Test Grade I, II, or III) from an accredited vocational institution such as NITA.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of active, continuous experience in your respective trade within a busy industrial plant, transport logistics hub, or construction setting.
- Prior experience carrying out artisan works within Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) installations or large-scale Inland Container Depots (ICDs) is a distinct advantage.
- High physical stamina, manual dexterity, and the ability to work comfortably outdoors, at heights, or in confined spaces depending on the trade profile.
