This role reports to the director and has a team of accountants below
Chief Accountant plays a vital role in the financial health and management of an organization. Here are the primary responsibilities and roles of a Chief Accountant:
1.Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and present accurate financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
2.Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Develop and manage the organization's budget.
- Forecast financial trends and prepare future financial plans.
3.Internal Controls:
- Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial data.
4.Compliance and Audits:
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Coordinate and manage external and internal audits.
- Address audit findings and implement corrective actions.
5.Tax Management:
- Oversee tax planning and compliance.
- Prepare and file tax returns accurately and on time.
6.Financial Analysis:
- Conduct financial analysis to support business decisions.
- Analyze financial performance and identify areas for improvement.
7.Team Leadership:
- Lead and manage the accounting team.
- Provide training and development opportunities for staff.
8.Cost Management:
- Monitor and control operational costs.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement cost reduction strategies.
9.Policy Development:
- Develop and update accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure that these policies are communicated and adhered to across the organization.
10.Strategic Planning:
- Participate in strategic planning and decision-making processes.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior management.
11.Cash Flow Management:
- Monitor and manage the organization’s cash flow.
- Ensure there are sufficient funds to meet operational needs and obligations.
12.Risk Management:
- Identify financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Ensure the organization is adequately insured against financial risks.
13.Technology Integration:
- Implement and manage accounting software and systems.
- Ensure that technology is leveraged to improve efficiency and accuracy.
14.Stakeholder Communication:
- Communicate financial information to stakeholders, including investors, creditors, and regulatory bodies.
Education & Experience
- A Degree in B. Com; Accounting or Finance option
- CPA (K), ACCA or its equivalent
- Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures including IFRS and IASs
- Member of ICPAK
- At least 8 years’ relevant experience, with 3 years’ in a senior role
- Proficiency in computerized accounting systems. Sage, QuickBooks
- Experience working in the retail industry e.g. supermarkets, distributors, hardware
- Demonstrated experience with preparing budgets and forecasts
- High level of proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Should have experience in leadership
