Converting Machine Operator
Job summary
ROLE PURPOSE: The Machine Operator will be responsible for performing various tasks to set up, operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on assigned machines. The Machine Operator will also be responsible to produce optimum output and to maintain quality standards of the required product.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
To ensure production output as per set quantity targets for each product at the specified quality parameters.
The same shall be communicated to you.
QUALITY- Quality of the product, cleaning, maintenance, collecting, and loading cores.
- To ensure the crates are clean before putting rolls or any products inside.
- To take full responsibility for the quality and product that is produced within the shift in line with the company’s quality systems, processes, and procedures.
- To take full responsibility for the shift in terms of management of machines, machine people, and working areas.
- To get proper handover from the previous shift and
- Responsible for the quality of the product.
- Responsible for the housekeeping surrounding the machine area and the production area in which they operate.
- Accountable and responsible to keep wastage within the set allowable limits.
- Responsible for ensuring that the waste generated above is weighed, recorded, and handed over at the bailing machine.
- Shall be fully liable for any for not meeting set quantity targets.
- Shall be fully liable for not meeting set quality targets.
- Shall be fully liable for any wastage over and above the set allowable limits.
- Responsible for filling accurately the conversion data for every reel they operate
- Responsible for ensuring the tail sealing glue is of the right consistency before filling into the glue tank.
- Responsible for checking the stickiness of tail sealing.
- Irrespective of what reels are issued by the jumbo reels department, responsible to check and confirm the right reels are being used for the product to be made.
- Responsible to do autonomous maintenance of the machine as per schedule.
- During the autonomous maintenance put the green and red tags for the abnormalities and rectify all the possible problems. Make detailed notes on the autonomous maintenance book.
- To inform a member of the maintenance team in the shortest time possible regarding any breakdown.
- After informing a member of the maintenance team, inform the converting supervisor and production manager regarding the breakdown and downtime and whenever necessary to HOD also.
- To indicate the reason and duration for the downtime with its downtime code in the production form.
- To assist in ensuring that the problem or breakdown on the machine is rectified in the shortest time possible. Including physically assisting the maintenance team with the machine parts, spare parts, and machine repairs.
- Co-operate and help the maintenance team during any change over time.
- Ensure all relevant communication is transmitted adequately and effectively to all people of the machine in the shift.
- To work closely with all Supervisors and ensure an effective handover.
- To ensure that Health and Safety rules and regulations are adhered to during the shift and all matters relating to this are dealt with in line with the companies Health and Safety policy and reported to relevant authorities.
- To ensure the wearing of all the Personal Protection Equipment at all times in the appropriate position. For example the face mask on the mouth and nose not on the forehead.
- Maintain housekeeping standards throughout the shift to ensure a clean and safe workplace for yourself and others.
- To ensure that the company resources are used for the intended purpose and effectively to ensure best-operating costs.
- Manage the workflow as directed by the Production supervisor.
- Implement and follow the Quality Management Systems procedures such as but not limited to ISO, OSHAS, EMS, EnMS, and KAIZEN.
- To have an active role in the company’s continuous improvement plan.
- Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or another relevant Engineering discipline.
- Minimum 2 years' experience as a Machine Operator or in a similar role within a manufacturing/production environment.
- Practical experience operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting production/converting machinery.
- Basic knowledge of machine maintenance, quality control, production processes, and waste management.
- Computer literate with the ability to accurately complete production records and reports.
- Good understanding of health and safety procedures, PPE requirements, and workplace housekeeping standards.
- Good communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead and supervise machine attendants and general workers effectively.
- Knowledge of ISO, OHS/OSH, Kaizen, and continuous improvement practices would be an added advantage.
