SOS Children’s Villages Kenya (SOS CV Kenya) is a member of the SOS Children's Villages International (CVI) Federation. SOS CV Kenya is a child-focused Non-Governmental Organization established in Kenya in 1973 to provide care and support to children who have lost or are at risk of losing the care of their biological family.  The organization’s vision is “Every child belongs to a family and grows with love, respect, and security” and its programs are driven by the mission of “building families for children in need, helping them shape their own futures and sharing in the development of their communities”. In this regard, the organization works to reduce poverty; increase access to quality education and decent work; reduce inequalities and build strong institutions in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 4,8,10, and 16. This is done through programs that are geared towards addressing the political, economic, health, and socio-cultural root causes of child vulnerability and family separation. The programs focus on Alternative Care, Family Strengthening, Youth Empowerment, Education, Health, Advocacy and Humanitarian Action. SOS Children’s Villages in Kenya implements programmes in five (5) of Kenya’s 47 Counties namely Nairobi, Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu and Meru. We seek to recruit a suitably qualified person to fill the position of ECD Head Teacher.


 


POSITION: ECD HEAD TEACHER, SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES SCHOOL, MOMBASA


Position summary: Reporting to the Head of Institution, Mombasa School, the position holder will support the supervision and effective coordination of the Pre-Primary Section, providing leadership and guidance to the teaching team to ensure quality teaching and learning.


 


The position holder will contribute to the growth and development of the section, including enrolment and the intellectual, spiritual, moral, social and physical development of young learners. As an instructional leader, they will promote effective teaching practices and facilitate appropriate, engaging and age-appropriate learning activities and experiences in line with professional teaching standards.  The position holder will empower and support teachers within the section by strengthening their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in line with the principles and requirements of Competency-Based Education (CBE). This will include providing guidance, coaching and support on teaching methodologies, classroom management, learner assessment and continuous improvement of learning outcomes.


 


In addition to supervising classroom teaching and learning, the position holder will promote learners’ participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to support holistic development, creativity, confidence and the identification and nurturing of individual talents.  Overall, the position holder will help create a safe, inclusive and stimulating learning environment that promotes quality education, learner wellbeing and the holistic development of young children.


 


Key performance areas and main responsibilities:



  • Provide strategic and instructional leadership in the implementation of the Kenya Early Years Curriculum, ensuring effective curriculum delivery and alignment with applicable education standards and institutional priorities.
  • Lead and oversee teaching and learning across the Pre-Primary Section, ensuring the effective planning, delivery, assessment and continuous improvement of learning experiences.
  • Supervise and quality-assure teaching practice, ensuring teachers/facilitators maintain accurate and professional teaching records, lesson plans, schemes of work, assessment records and other required documentation.
  • Champion child-centred, play-based and developmentally appropriate learning approaches that recognise the individual needs, abilities, interests and developmental stages of young learners.
  • Monitor and analyse learner progress and section performance, using attendance, assessment and other relevant data to identify learning gaps, improvement priorities and appropriate interventions.
  • Provide effective people leadership and supervision, including setting expectations, monitoring performance, providing regular feedback and promoting accountability among ECD staff.
  • Build the professional capacity of the teaching team through structured coaching, mentoring, peer learning, professional development and sharing of effective ECD practices.
  • Promote a safe, nurturing, inclusive and child-friendly learning environment, ensuring that children’s safety, safeguarding, health, dignity, participation and overall wellbeing remain central to all activities.
  • Strengthen parent and stakeholder engagement by promoting effective communication and partnerships with parents, caregivers and relevant stakeholders in support of children’s holistic development and learning outcomes.
  • Lead co-curricular and enrichment activities that promote creativity, social-emotional development, physical wellbeing, confidence and the identification and nurturing of children’s emerging talents.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Kenyan ECDE requirements, institutional policies and quality standards, and maintain readiness for relevant inspections, assessments and quality assurance processes.
  • Support enrolment, retention and growth of the Pre-Primary Section by contributing to initiatives that enhance the quality, reputation and attractiveness of the ECD programme.
  • Promote continuous improvement and innovation by identifying opportunities to strengthen curriculum delivery, learning environments, teaching practices and outcomes for young learners.
  • Prepare and provide timely reports and performance updates on teaching and learning, staff performance, learner progress, attendance, safeguarding, compliance and other key aspects of the Pre-Primary Section.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Institution and other school leaders in implementing the school’s strategic priorities and ensuring that the ECD section contributes effectively to overall institutional performance.


 


Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience.


The ideal candidate for the position of ECD Head Teacher should meet the following minimum requirements:



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Development/Education or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
  • Valid registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and compliance with all applicable professional requirements for teaching in Kenya.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience in Early Childhood Development and Education, with demonstrated experience in a senior, supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in early years curriculum implementation, child-centred and play-based learning, learner assessment, classroom management and ECD quality standards.
  • Training or certification in Guidance and Counselling will be an added advantage.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in relevant digital tools, including the ability to use technology for teaching, learner assessment, reporting, communication and school administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, coach and mentor teaching staff, with strong skills in performance management and professional development.
  • Knowledge of child safeguarding, child protection, health, safety and wellbeing standards applicable to early childhood settings will be an added advantage.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem-solving and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, school leadership and other stakeholders.

SOS Children’s Villages Kenya takes (Child safeguarding and Asset safeguarding) very seriously it is the Project Officer’s responsibility to ensure that they understand and comply with the child safeguarding and Asset safeguarding policies of the Organization. The Project Officer must sign and commit to adhere to the organization’s provisions on Safeguarding which encompasses child and youth safeguarding; asset safeguarding; and adult safeguarding.
