o Conduct site assessments to evaluate potential locations for minigrid installations.
o Perform feasibility studies including resource assessments (solar irradiation, water flow rates, etc.).
o Analyze local energy demand and load profiles to determine system requirements.
System Design and Engineering
o Develop detailed design specifications for solar PV arrays, BESS, and small hydropower systems.
o Create system architecture diagrams integrating generation, storage, and distribution components.
o Use simulation tools (e.g., HOMER, PVSyst) to model energy production and system performance.
o Ensure designs comply with local, regional, and international regulations and standards.
Component Selection and Sizing
o Select appropriate photovoltaic panels, inverters, and other solar components.
o Determine the optimal size and type of BESS, considering capacity, discharge rates, and lifecycle.
o Design hydropower systems including turbine selection, flow control mechanisms, and generators.
o Ensure all components are compatible and meet the system’s design specifications.
Grid Integration and Control Systems
o Design smart grid integration plans to ensure seamless connectivity with the existing power grid.
o Develop control strategies to optimize energy flow and storage.
o Implement systems for real-time monitoring and control.
Optimization and Efficiency Enhancements
o Conduct system optimization studies to maximize efficiency and minimize losses.
o Implement advanced algorithms for demand-side management and peak shaving.
o Evaluate and integrate renewable energy forecasting models to improve system reliability.
o Analyze test data and make necessary adjustments to system design and operation strategies
Cost Analysis and Budget Management
o Review detailed cost estimates for system components, installation, and maintenance.
o Conduct cost-benefit analyses to determine the economic viability of different design options.
Training and Knowledge Transfer
o Develop and deliver training programs and documentation to support knowledge transfer.
o Stay updated with the latest technological advancements in renewable energy and smart grid systems.
o Engage in continuous improvement initiatives and projects to enhance system performance.
Maintenance, Reporting and Documentation
o Implement long-term monitoring systems to track performance and identify issues.
o Conduct regular evaluations to assess system efficiency and identify opportunities for improvement.
o Prepare comprehensive reports detailing design specifications, performance metrics, and optimization results.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering, with a focus on power systems design - renewable energy and minigrid design experience is an added advantage.
- Proven track record of leading engineering teams and managing complex projects.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in relevant design software.
- In-depth knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Desired Qualifications:
- EPRA license.
- Experience with renewable energy systems, including solar, wind, and battery storage.
- Familiarity with grid integration systems.
