Our client is a startup poultry abattoir and integrated poultry operation based in Ruiru, Kenya. The company forms part of the respected group, a leading integrated poultry business in Uganda with a strong reputation in day-old chicks, feed production, and poultry processing.
In its initial phase, the Kenyan operation processes 2–3 days per week while building an integrated and traceable supply chain that includes contract out growers, feed supply oversight, chick importation, and broiler processing. The business is designed for scalable growth anchored in food safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.
They are seeking to hire a Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance Supervisor who’s primarily responsible for leading food safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance across the entire poultry value chain from day-old chicks through processing and finished product distribution.
This role serves as the company’s food safety authority and regulatory custodian, ensuring full compliance with:
- The Meat Control Act (Kenya)
- KEBS poultry and meat standards
- Department of Veterinary Services requirements
- County regulatory authorities
- Environmental and public health regulations
- HACCP principles and international best practices
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Food Safety & Quality Assurance Leadership (Primary Function)
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve HACCP plans, prerequisite programs (PRPs), SSOPs, GMPs, and all operational SOPs.
- Maintain and control the master document system for policies, procedures, and records.
- Supervise Critical Control Points (CCPs) during processing days.
- Monitor yields, condemnations, defects, microbiological trends, and corrective actions.
- Lead internal audits and mock recalls.
- Manage non-conformance investigations and corrective/preventive action plans.
- Ensure full traceability from farm to finished product.
- Train staff and contractors on food safety, hygiene, biosecurity, and regulatory compliance.
- Act as primary liaison during regulatory inspections and audits.
2. Regulatory Compliance & Licensing Governance
- Ensure full compliance with all required licenses and permits, including:
- Abattoir licensing under the Meat Control Act
- KEBS product conformity
- Veterinary approvals
- Import permits
- Public health and environmental clearances
- Chick holding facility licensing
- Maintain a compliance register tracking renewals, inspections, and corrective actions.
- Liaise proactively with KEBS, Department of Veterinary Services, county authorities, NEMA, and other regulators.
- Always ensure regulatory readiness.
3. Quality Oversight of Contract Out Growers
- Conduct farm audits against approved biosecurity, welfare, and production SOPs.
- Verify compliance with vaccination, flock health, housing, and feed standards.
- Provide technical QA guidance to reduce rejections and improve carcass quality.
- Monitor live bird quality prior to slaughter.
- Support scheduling coordination to ensure consistent supply.
4. Feed Supply Quality Oversight
- Review and approve feed formulations and specifications.
- Conduct audits of the contracted feed miller.
- Verify ingredient quality, traceability, and testing compliance.
- Retention samples
- External lab testing
- Ensure alignment with KEBS and food safety standards.
5. Day-Old Chick Importation & Holding Compliance
- Ensure compliance with veterinary import documentation and permits.
- Oversee biosecurity during chick transport.
- Audit the licensed holding facility for hygiene, welfare, and documentation.
- Maintain full traceability records for chick distribution.
6. Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Prepare weekly and monthly QA and compliance reports.
- Track and analyze quality performance trends.
- Drive initiatives to:
- Improve yields
- Reduce condemnations
- Minimize regulatory risk
- Strengthen biosecurity
- Support scale-up planning while maintaining compliance integrity.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Pre-chill eviscerated yield ≥ 72%
- Total condemnation rate ≤ 0.5%
- Zero major regulatory non-conformities
- 100% valid license compliance always
- CCP deviations closed within 24 hours
- Farm audit compliance ≥ 90%
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Food Science & Technology, Veterinary Science, Animal Production, Agribusiness, or related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in:
- Food safety supervision
- HACCP implementation
- Regulatory compliance
- Poultry processing or integrated poultry operations
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Meat Control Act (Kenya)
- KEBS poultry/meat standards
- Veterinary import requirements
- HACCP and GMP systems
- Experience in supply chain quality oversight is advantageous.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel regularly.

Working Conditions

- 45 hours per week with flexibility required for processing schedules, inspections, and urgent compliance matters
