Position Title: Rhino Monitoring Ranger
Reporting To: Rhino Monitoring Supervisor
Location: Segera Conservancy, Laikipia County, Kenya
1. Background
Founded in 2008, the ZEITZ foundation is a non-profit organization registered in Kenya and Germany. 2. Job Purpose
The Rhino Monitoring Ranger is responsible for the daily monitoring, tracking, and protection of rhinos within Segera Conservancy. The role ensures accurate data collection to support conservation management, contributes to anti-poaching efforts, and safeguards the health, safety, and well-being of the rhino population.
3. Key Responsibilities
3.1 Rhino Tracking and Monitoring
- Conduct daily foot and vehicle patrols to locate, identify, and observe individual rhinos.
- Use GPS devices, radio tracking equipment, and visual observation to monitor rhino locations, movements, and behaviour.
- Maintain accurate records of rhino sightings, ear notch patterns, and any unusual activities or observations.
3.2 Data Collection and Reporting
- Collect and record data on rhino health, habitat use, and population dynamics.
- Identify individual rhinos using ear notch patterns, horn size, and other distinguishing features.
- Prepare and submit daily monitoring reports to the Wildlife Monitoring Officer.
3.3 Anti-Poaching Support
- Support law enforcement and anti-poaching teams through surveillance and security patrols.
- Immediately report any suspicious activities, tracks, or evidence of poaching.
3.4 Habitat and Environmental Monitoring
- Assess the condition of rhino habitats, including water sources and browse availability.
- Identify and report environmental threats such as fires, drought impacts, or invasive species.
3.5 Animal Health Monitoring
- Observe rhinos for injuries, signs of illness, or abnormal behaviour and promptly report findings to veterinary or management teams.
- Assist in veterinary interventions, immobilizations, and translocation operations when required.
3.6 Community and Visitor Engagement
- Sensitize visitors and community members on rhino conservation and protection.
- Act as a conservation ambassador by promoting responsible behaviour around wildlife, particularly rhinos.
3.7 Equipment Care and Maintenance
- Ensure proper use, care, and maintenance of monitoring equipment including GPS units, binoculars, radios, and patrol vehicles.
- Report any equipment faults or damage promptly.
4. Qualifications
- Minimum of a Certificate or Diploma in Wildlife Management, Conservation, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
- Valid Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) or recognized ranger training certification is an added advantage.
- Valid motorbike and/or driving license is an added advantage.
5. Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience in wildlife monitoring, ranger duties, or conservation fieldwork.
- Proven experience in rhino monitoring, tracking, or anti-poaching operations is highly desirable.
- Experience working in protected areas or conservancies is an added advantage.
6. Skills and Competencies
- Strong tracking and field observation skills.
- Competence in the use of GPS units, radios, and data collection tools.
- Good report-writing and record-keeping skills.
- Strong situational awareness and ability to respond to security threats.
- Physical fitness and ability to work long hours in challenging field conditions.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- High level of integrity, discipline, and commitment to wildlife conservation.
