SOS Children’s Villages in Kenya is a member of the SOS Children's Villages International (CVI) Federation, a child-focused Non-Governmental Organization established in 1973 to provide care and support to children who have lost or are at risk of losing the care of their biological family.
The organization’s vision is “Every child belongs to a family and grows with love, respect, and security and its programs are driven by the mission of “building families for children in need, helping them shape their own futures and sharing in the development of their communities”. In this regard, the organization works to reduce poverty; increase access to quality education and decent work; reduce inequalities, and build strong institutions as laid out in SDGs 1, 4,8,10, and 16.
This is done through programs that are geared towards addressing the political, economic, health, and social root causes that lead to high levels of child vulnerability and put families at risk of breaking down. The programs focus on Alternative Care, Family Strengthening, Youth Empowerment, Education, Health Care and Advocacy.
SOS Children’s Villages in Kenya implements programs in five (5) of Kenya’s 47 Counties namely Nairobi, Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, and Meru. SOS Children’s Villages. We seek to recruit suitably qualified person to fill the following position of School Bursar.
SCHOOL BURSAR (1 POSITION)
Reporting to the School Principal and program Accountant, the Bursar will support the school in the day-to-day financial and administrative operations, ensuring accurate fee management, proper record-keeping, and adherence to financial procedures in line with CBEschool requirements.
Key Performance Areas and Responsibilities
1. Fee Management & Receipting
- Receive and receipt school fees and other income
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date student fee records
- Track outstanding balances and support follow-up with parents/guardians
- Prepare fee reports and reconciliations
2. Financial Records & Data Entry
- Record financial transactions in the accounting system (e.g., D365/ERP)
- Review all financial documents in relation to availability of funds before final approval is done.
- Maintain proper filing of financial documents (physical and electronic)
- Maintain accurate student accounts records, financial transactions, and receivables, reconciling accounts, resolving discrepancies.
- Preparation of basic financial reports for analysis and decision making
3. Cash & Petty Cash Management
- Manage petty cash under supervision
- Ensure proper documentation and reconciliation of cash transactions
- Banking of school collections
4. Budget Support (CBE Activities)
- Track expenses for CBE learning activities and materials
- Monitoring of budget utilization at activity/class level
- Compile data for budgeting and reporting
5. Procurement & Stores Support
- Processing purchase requests and tracking deliveries
- Maintain basic records for school supplies and learning materials
- Maintain stock checks and inventory updates
6. Compliance & Controls
- Ensure all transactions are properly documented and approved
- Adhere to SOS financial policies and school procedures by Implementing and enforcing financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard institutional assets, prevent fraud, and ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Support audit preparation by organizing required documentation
7. Administrative Support
- Provide general administrative support to the school office
- Responsible for coordination of school activities requiring financial support
- Manage relationships with external vendors, financial institutions, and service providers, negotiating contracts, fees, and service level agreements to optimize service quality and cost-effectiveness
- Support in other local resource mobilization activities to increase revenue to the institution.
- Provide financial performance feedback to the location management team on monthly basis.
- Maintain confidentiality of financial information
Formal qualifications & Experience for JS teacher
- CPA I / CPA II (or pursuing CPA (K))
- Minimum 1–2 years’ experience in finance, accounts, or school administration
- Basic understanding of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC)
- Experience in fee handling, receipting, and reconciliations is an added advantage
- Familiarity with accounting systems (D365/ERP or similar)
- Basic to intermediate Excel skills
