WINCH CRANE OPERATOR
Job summary
The Winch Crane Operator is responsible for operating stationary or vessel-mounted winch-driven crane systems, including derrick cranes, pedestal cranes, and heavy-duty electric hoisting winches.
Job descriptions & requirements
- Safely operate heavy-duty winch mechanisms, drum systems, and boom controls to hoist, luff, and swing high-tonnage cargo between vessels, barges, and the quayside.
- Monitor wire rope spooling on winch drums closely to ensure even wrapping, prevent bird-caging (tangling), and maintain proper line tension under varying dynamic loads.
- Calculate crane capacities dynamically using load charts, accounting for boom angles, winch line pull ratings, counterweights, and water tidal movements for vessel-mounted units.
- Work in flawless synchronization with certified Signalers and Riggers, executing operations based on standardized hand signals and clear two-way radio instructions.
- Conduct detailed pre-shift inspections of the winch drums, brake bands, hydraulic motors, clutches, wire ropes, sheaves, and hook blocks, documenting findings in the machinery logbook.
- Maintain a zero-accident record by strictly adhering to port lifting protocols, calculating safe working loads (SWL), and enforcing safety exclusion zones beneath active load paths.
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or technical vocational certificate.
- Valid NTSA Special Stamp (Class G) or equivalent authorization for heavy industrial machinery.
- Valid driving license of class B, C, E with a Forklift endorsement.
- Valid Crane Operator Certification / Winch Crane Operator Certificate specifying winch-controlled systems, pedestal cranes, or derrick operations from an accredited maritime or industrial training body.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of active experience operating heavy-duty winch hoisting systems or lattice-boom cranes within a marine port, shipyard, or heavy industrial logistics depot. Direct operational experience operating hoisting gear or marine cranes within Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) installations is a distinct advantage.
- Deep understanding of wire rope inspection criteria, hydraulic winch mechanics, and exceptional depth perception; must pass a comprehensive physical stamina and vertigo assessment.
