Vacant Position: Assistant Animal Health Technician
Location: Segera, Laikipia County
Reporting to: Livestock Manager

Job Purpose: To support the Livestock Manager in ensuring optimal animal health, productivity, and welfare through effective disease prevention, treatment, vaccination, breeding support, and implementation of best livestock management practices.
The role is responsible for promoting sustainable livestock production, maintaining accurate health and operational records, supporting compliance with biosecurity and animal welfare standards, and contributing to the overall efficiency and profitability of the livestock operation.
Key Responsibilities
A. Animal Health Management
- Administer treatment to sick and injured animals and ensure proper medication is provided as prescribed.
- Carry out basic diagnostic procedures and collect samples for laboratory analysis.
- Conduct post-mortem examinations and document findings accordingly.
- Monitor animal health conditions daily and promptly report any abnormalities or disease outbreaks.
- Implement vaccination schedules and support disease prevention and control programs.
- Participate in tick, parasite, and vector control activities to promote animal health.
- Provide emergency response support during disease outbreaks, injuries, or other livestock-related emergencies.
B. Breeding and Herd Management
- Conduct pregnancy diagnosis for breeding herds and maintain breeding and fertility records.
- Assist in calving, lambing, kidding, and other animal husbandry procedures where necessary.
- Ensure proper animal identification, tagging, and herd record management.
C. Livestock Operations and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with biosecurity, animal welfare, and the conservancy safety standards.
- Participate in livestock inspections and audits as required.
- Assist in the implementation of farm operational plans and livestock improvement initiatives.
D. Training and Advisory Support
- 1. Train and advise herders on animal health, nutrition, welfare, hygiene, and proper livestock handling practices.
2. Promote best livestock management practices among herders and other team members.
E. Records and Reporting
- Maintain accurate animal health records, treatment records, vaccination schedules, and breeding records.
- Prepare and submit timely field reports and operational updates.
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and accountability of veterinary drugs, vaccines, and equipment.
F. Farm Support Duties
- Monitor feed and water consumption patterns and report any concerns affecting animal productivity.
- Assist in pasture and grazing management programs to support livestock productivity.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of animal handling facilities, treatment areas, and equipment.
- Work closely with veterinarians, livestock officers, and other farm staff to ensure effective livestock management.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the management from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Certificate or Diploma in Animal Health, Veterinary Science, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- At least 1–2 years’ experience in livestock or animal health management will be an added advantage.
- Knowledge of livestock diseases, vaccination procedures, breeding, and animal welfare practices.
- Ability to conduct basic animal health diagnostics and maintain proper records.
- Computer literacy and report-writing skills will be an added advantage.
