Job Purpose
The overall purpose of this job is to support the Engineering Manager in planning, coordinating and monitoring engineering, maintenance and utilities operations to ensure safe, reliable and efficient plant performance. The role provides technical leadership, drives equipment reliability, energy efficiency and cost-effective maintenance, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and deputises for the Engineering Manager when required to ensure continuity of engineering operations.
Key duties and responsibilities
a. Support the Engineering Manager in planning, coordinating and monitoring engineering and maintenance activities to ensure maximum equipment reliability and operational efficiency.
b. Assist in the planning, execution and monitoring of engineering projects, ensuring delivery within approved budgets, timelines and technical specifications.
c. Deputize for the Engineering Manager during periods of absence by coordinating day-to-day engineering operations and providing functional leadership to the engineering team.
d. Coordinate maintenance activities to minimize equipment downtime and ensure timely completion of preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance programmes.
e. Monitor engineering performance indicators and support initiatives aimed at improving equipment availability, plant efficiency and maintenance effectiveness.
f. Support the preparation, monitoring and control of engineering budgets, maintenance costs and resource utilization.
g. Review and process material requisitions for engineering spare parts, tools, equipment and maintenance materials to ensure timely availability.
h. Support supplier engagement, contractor supervision and service delivery to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness and compliance with contractual obligations.
i. Investigate equipment failures and recurring breakdowns, conduct root cause analysis and implement sustainable corrective and preventive actions.
j. Identify opportunities for process optimization, energy efficiency, cost reduction and continuous improvement within engineering operations.
k. Ensure engineering activities comply with company policies, engineering standards, statutory regulations, environmental, health and safety (EHS) requirements and food safety standards.
l. Support implementation of engineering improvement initiatives, capital projects and plant modifications.
m. Prepare engineering reports, maintenance performance reports and project updates for management review.
n. Coach, mentor and provide technical guidance to technicians and engineering staff to enhance capability and performance.
o. Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, contractors, suppliers and regulatory authorities.
p. Keep abreast of emerging engineering technologies, maintenance best practices and industry developments to improve operational performance.
q. Perform any other duties assigned by the Engineering Manager.

Key performance indicators include equipment availability, maintenance schedule adherence, breakdown response time, engineering cost control, energy efficiency, statutory compliance, EHS performance, food safety compliance and timely completion of approved engineering projects.

Knowledge, experience and qualifications required
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related Engineering discipline.
- Professional registration with the relevant engineering body is an added advantage.
- Minimum of five (5) years' engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably within the FMCG or food processing industry.
- Demonstrated experience in maintenance planning, engineering project coordination and equipment reliability improvement.
- Working knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance systems.
- Knowledge of EHS, food safety and statutory compliance requirements.

- The jobholder makes routine operational decisions relating to engineering and maintenance activities within approved policies and delegated authority.
- Recommends engineering improvements, maintenance priorities and resource requirements.
- Escalates strategic, financial and high-risk operational decisions to the Engineering Manager.
