AVIATION SAFETY MANAGER

The Safety Manager is responsible for providing guidance and direction for the planning, implementation and operation of the organization’s safety management system (SMS) and reports directly to the Accountable Manager. In practical terms this means that the Safety Manager must:

 

a) Be able to cope with changing circumstances and situations with little supervision.

b) Be responsible for providing information and advice to senior management and to the Accountable Manager on matters relating to safe operations;

c) Promote safety awareness within the organisation;

d) Ensure that safety management has high priority within the company.

e) Manage all aspects of the organisation’s SMS, including:

- Monitoring the effectiveness of SMS;

- Initiating corrective actions when necessary;

- Providing safety reports on SMS performance on periodic basis;

- Providing safety advice to senior management and proposing corrective actions on safety related-issues as needed;

- Ensuring that safety-related documentation and records are available and up-to-date.

 

In order to achieve the above the Safety Manager must interact with operational personnel, senior managers/departmental heads throughout the organization. The Safety Manager should also foster positive relationships with regulatory authorities, agencies and service providers outside the organization.

 

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and abilities:

a) Proven exposure to Safety & Quality Assurance;

b) SMS Course or equivalent qualification;

c) Proven experience in the aviation environment;

d) Broad operational knowledge and experience in the functions of an aviation organization;

e) Sound knowledge of safety management principles and practices;

f) Good written and verbal communication skills;

g) Well-developed interpersonal skills;

h) Ability to relate to all levels, both inside and outside the organization;

i) Organizational ability;

j) Ability to work unsupervised and supervise Safety Department staff;

k) Good analytical and computer skills;

l) Leadership skills and a strong personality.

 

The position will be based at the Phoenix House, Wilson Airport and the terms will include a salary appropriate to qualifications and experience, medical insurance and access to a pension scheme. Applicants must indicate when they could take up the position subject to an offer of employment not later than 10 September and also be available for an interview at short notice.
