About Mukuru Promotion Centre
Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC) is a faith-based charitable organization supporting communities in the informal settlements of Mukuru, South B, Nairobi. The Sisters of Mercy founded MPC in 1985 in response to the community challenges in the Mukuru Informal Settlements. It is situated at the heart of the Industrial Area, along the New Likoni Road just 1 km off Mombasa Road and borders the Mukuru Kayaba Informal Settlement.
MPC endeavors to empower the Mukuru community through education, health, welfare and social rehabilitation services.
ABOUT SOCIAL WELFARE AND SAFEGUARDING
Social welfare and safeguarding department cuts across other departments of MPC. The social workers and child protection officers are the key to keeping MPC focused on its goal of serving the most vulnerable at Mukuru slums. The program’s intervention in the community is facilitated through helping community members identify issues affecting them and finding the best ways to solve them.
Qualification and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Child Protection and Safeguarding (mandatory)
- Additional training or background in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or Community Development is an added advantage
- Minimum of Five (5) years’ relevant experience in child protection, safeguarding, or social welfare work
- Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable children, families, schools, and community structures
- Strong knowledge of child protection laws and frameworks, including the Children Act, 2022
- Proven skills in case management, documentation, and report writing
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Data Collection, Documentation & Reporting
- Collect and maintain data on all activities within the assigned station
- Maintain an updated list of names and contacts of Community Health Volunteers (CHVs), Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, Chairpersons, and Village Elders
- Compile and update a list of pending cases across all departments and ongoing projects
- Track and update progress on community and departmental cases, including interventions provided
- Follow up on child abuse cases in court and attend court sessions when required
- Prepare reports on teenage pregnancy cases in schools, including interventions undertaken
- Prepare mentorship talks, work plans, and schedules for motivational and life-skills sessions
- Update and submit records on the use of goods received books, delivery books, and gate goods files
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for the assigned station
2. Child Protection & Case Management
- Conduct home visits for child protection assessments and follow-ups
- Identify, monitor, and follow up on cases of absenteeism, illness, school dropouts, substance abuse, conflict with the law, and other child welfare concerns
- Ensure all child abuse cases are properly referred, documented, and confirmed in writing
- Maintain up-to-date profiles for all clients, candidates, sponsored learners, and needy cases
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information
3. Advocacy, Safeguarding & Compliance
- Advocate for the rights and welfare of children at all times
- Ensure strict adherence to the Child Protection Policy and Code of Conduct by all stakeholders
- Organize advocacy and awareness meetings for teachers, parents, learners, and community stakeholders on children’s rights and protection
- Carry out all duties in a manner that enhances the reputation and values of Mukuru Promotion Centre
4. Education, Sponsorship & Special Needs Support
- Work closely with school administrations to monitor academic progress and identify needy cases
- Identify, recommend, and refer needy learners for appropriate support
- Conduct home visits for grade 10 pupils in MPC-sponsored schools to identify potential beneficiaries for the sponsorship program
- Collaborate with the Sponsorship Department to:
- Update sponsorship profiles
- Support learner selection processes
- Assist with photography of sponsored learners
- Support letter writing and communication with sponsors
- Assist in referring children with special needs to suitable institutions
5. Community Engagement & Partnerships
- Network and partner with like-minded organizations, institutions, and stakeholders to enhance welfare services
- Identify extremely needy cases through referrals and home visits
- Support distribution of food and relief assistance and maintain accurate records
6. Professional Conduct
- Refrain from any activity that may create a conflict of interest with employment at Mukuru Promotion Centre
- Uphold professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct at all times
