About the Role

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Client Verification & Compliance Officer to join our Legal & Compliance team.

This role is responsible for verifying client information, conducting compliance checks, and supporting the onboarding of new clients in line with regulatory requirements and internal policies.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring that all clients are properly verified before activation, while maintaining high standards of accuracy, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance.

You will work closely with the compliance, legal, and operations teams to ensure that client records are complete, risks are identified early, and all onboarding processes meet applicable regulatory standards.

 

Key Responsibilities

1.       Client Verification & Onboarding

  • Review and verify client information and documentation during the onboarding process.
  • Ensure all required identification and corporate documents are received and validated before client activation.
  • Conduct Know Your Customer (KYC) reviews including identity verification and risk classification.
  • Conduct Know Your Business (KYB) checks for corporate clients including ownership structure verification and identification of beneficial owners.
  • Assess client documentation for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.

2.       Compliance & Risk Screening

  • Conduct compliance checks including AML/CFT screening, sanctions screening, politically exposed persons (PEP) checks, and adverse media reviews.
  • Identify potential risk indicators and escalate high-risk cases for enhanced due diligence.
  • Review client source of funds and ownership structures where applicable.
  • Flag suspicious or incomplete documentation and recommend appropriate action.

3.       Documentation & Records Management

  • Maintain accurate and well-organised client onboarding records in accordance with regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Ensure proper storage, confidentiality, and protection of sensitive client information.
  • Monitor onboarding timelines to ensure compliance with service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Support internal compliance audits and regulatory reviews when required.

4.       Operational & Compliance Support

  • Assist in improving internal onboarding procedures and compliance processes.
  • Support the preparation and updating of internal compliance documentation and guidelines.
  • Work closely with internal teams to resolve onboarding queries and documentation gaps.
  • Assist with other compliance or operational tasks as assigned.

 

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Law, Business Administration, Risk Management, Finance, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in compliance, KYC verification, client onboarding, fraud review, or risk management within a regulated environment such as:
    • Financial services
    • Fintech companies
    • Banks or SACCOs
    • Law firms
    • Compliance departments

Knowledge & Skills

  • Good understanding of KYC, AML, and client verification processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to review documentation accurately.
  • Excellent organisational and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple files and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Added Advantage

  • ACAMS certification or other AML/compliance certification.
  • Experience working in financial services, fintech, or compliance environments.
