KENYA MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE REPLACEMENT
The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Collaboration with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is conducting a study titled Pregnancy Risk and Infant Surveillance and Measurement Alliance (PRISMA) and Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) study in Western Kenya. PRISMA MNH is a harmonized, prospective open-cohort study implemented across five study sites in India, Pakistan, Zambia, Kenya, and Ghana. The primary goal is to estimate the burden of maternal, fetal, and neonatal deaths and select maternal and newborn morbidities in the catchment areas. The study is designed to address current gaps in research and data availability on maternal, fetal, and infant outcomes and risk factors. Due to its continued growth, the project seeks to fill below position:
Position: Clinical Research Scientist - KMR 5(1 position)
Location: KEMRI-CGHR with fieldwork in Western Kenya
Reporting to: FHU Lead
Job Summary:
The officer will be responsible for overseeing all stages of the development and implementation of research in western Kenya, including sustained stakeholder engagement with national and sub-national MOH partners, conduct formative and pilot research phases, and trial implementation. S/he will chair in-country management meetings and be responsible for the preparation of standard operating procedures, protocol writing, manage submission of protocol amendments to SERU, coordinate fieldwork, and oversee centralized functions of the study.
a) Job Descriptions
The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail:
i. Implementing pre-clinical and clinical research projects and/or supervise designated aspects of the work
ii. General diagnosis, care, treatment and provision of specialized clinical care for study participants
iii. Assist in carrying out fieldwork and pre-clinical and clinical experimental procedures
iv. Carry out experimental and/or developmental work
v. Contributing to interpretation and validation of results
vi. Conduct community diagnosis, care and treatment during Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities
vii. Assist in organization of the internal scientific seminars
viii. Guiding visiting scientific students /students on attachment
ix. Maintaining the scientific pre-clinical and clinical facility
x. Planning and coordinating meetings for internal project teams and external collaborators or visitors
xi. Hosting or participating in scheduled conference calls with international study partners
xii. Developing standard operating procedures (SOP) for data collection, processing and the management and deployment of study drugs.
b) Person Specifications
i. Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following fields; - Medicine and surgery or equivalent qualifications from a recognized Institution.
ii. Masters’ degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology or in a related field is preferred.
iii. Proficiency in computer application

Terms of employment:
This is a one (1) year contract, renewable subject to availability of funds, with a probation period for the first 3 months.
