Position Overview

The Graduate Quantity Surveyor will support the Quantity Surveying team in managing the financial and contractual aspects of construction and interior fit-out projects. The role provides practical exposure to cost planning, procurement, contract administration, project valuation, and cost control while enabling the graduate to develop professional competencies within the construction industry.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior team members to ensure projects are delivered within budget, meet quality standards, and achieve value for money.

Responsibilities

1. Cost Planning & Estimation

·        Assist in the preparation of cost estimates for construction and interior fit-out projects.

·        Support the development and monitoring of project budgets.

·        Participate in quantity take-offs and measurement of works.

·        Assist in preparing preliminary cost plans and cost comparisons.

·        Support cost analysis for project variations and maintenance works.

·        Assist in gathering pricing information from suppliers and subcontractors.

2. Procurement & Tendering Support

·        Assist in preparing Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and tender documentation.

·        Support the tender evaluation process by compiling and analyzing received quotations.

·        Participate in obtaining quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.

·        Assist in preparing tender comparison reports.

·        Support procurement tracking and supplier documentation management.

 

3. Contract Administration

·        Assist in maintaining project contract records and documentation.

·        Support the preparation of variation orders and contract correspondence.

·        Monitor contractual documentation and filing systems.

·        Assist in tracking project variations and claims.

·        Support compliance with contractual requirements and project procedures.

4. Project Cost Control

·        Assist in monitoring project expenditures against approved budgets.

·        Maintain project cost trackers and financial records.

·        Support preparation of interim valuations and payment certificates.

·        Assist in identifying potential cost overruns and reporting findings to supervisors.

·        Participate in project progress reviews and cost reporting meetings.

5. Financial Reporting & Documentation

·        Assist in preparing project financial reports and cost summaries.

·        Support reconciliation of project costs and supplier invoices.

·        Maintain accurate records of project expenditures and procurement activities.

·        Assist in preparing final account documentation.

·        Ensure all project financial records are updated and properly filed.

6. Site Measurement & Project Support

·        Conduct site visits for measurement, valuation, and progress monitoring under supervision.

·        Verify completed works for payment certification purposes.

·        Assist in recording project quantities and site observations.

·        Support project teams in resolving cost-related matters.

·        Liaise with site teams, suppliers, and subcontractors as required.

7. Value Engineering & Continuous Improvement

·        Assist in identifying cost-saving opportunities during project execution.

·        Participate in value engineering exercises aimed at improving project efficiency.

·        Research market trends, construction materials, and pricing information.

·        Contribute ideas for improving project cost management processes.

 

Key performance Indicators

Cost Estimation & Documentation

  • Accuracy of quantity take-offs and measurements.
  • Timely preparation of BOQs and cost reports.
  • Percentage of assigned cost documents submitted within deadlines.

Procurement Support

  • Timely preparation of tender documentation.
  • Accuracy of tender comparison reports.
  • Turnaround time in obtaining supplier quotations.

Cost Control

  • Accuracy of project cost tracking records.
  • Timely updating of project cost reports.
  • Contribution to identifying cost-saving opportunities.

Project Support

  • Timely completion of assigned project tasks.
  • Quality and accuracy of project documentation.
  • Number of site measurements and valuations completed as scheduled.

Professional Development

  • Achievement of learning and development objectives.
  • Supervisor performance assessment ratings.
  • Participation in training and professional development activities.
  • Progress towards professional registration requirements.

Compliance & Quality

  • Accuracy and completeness of project records.
  • Adherence to company procedures and standards.

Qualification, Experience, Skills & Competencies

·        Bachelor's Degree in Quantity Surveying from a recognized institution.

·        Recent graduate or up to two (2) years of relevant experience.

·        Registration as a Graduate Member with the Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (IQSK) is an added advantage.

·        Demonstrated interest in construction and interior fit-out projects.


Skills & Competencies

·        Basic understanding of quantity surveying principles and practices.

·        Knowledge of construction materials and building technology.

·        Strong numerical and analytical skills.

·        Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and other Microsoft Office applications.

·        Familiarity with quantity surveying software is an added advantage.

·        Good communication and interpersonal skills.

·        High attention to detail and accuracy.

·        Ability to learn quickly and work under supervision.

·        Strong organizational and time management skills.
