Job Description: Imports Officer
Location: Nairobi
Role Purpose: Talent Grid Africa on behalf of their client in the furniture retail industry is hiring an Imports Officer’s. The Imports Officer’s overall responsibility is to ensure the process of importation is duly followed.
They will oversee sourcing of items from overseas, making payment to the suppliers, application of IDF, booking vessels, confirmation of freight rates, documentation, liaising with the company’s clearing agent for payment of duty, handling clearance of the consignment up to the delivery to our insured premises.
This role plays a critical part in coordinating logistics, documentation, and compliance to ensure goods are delivered on time and within budget, which is a core responsibility in import operations
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the full importation cycle from sourcing to final delivery
- Track consignments across different shipping line platforms and ensure timely updates
- Maintain and update container arrival schedules
- Liaise with overseas suppliers on orders, documentation, and shipment status
- Book vessels and confirm freight rates with shipping partners
- Prepare and manage all import documentation including IDF applications and shipment files
- Open and maintain consignment files for all shipments
- Ensure compliance with customs regulations and import procedures
- Liaise with clearing agents to facilitate smooth customs clearance
- Process payments to suppliers, freight providers, and other stakeholders
- Handle customs duty payments and track freight invoices
- Perform costing analysis for all cleared consignments
- Support accurate record-keeping of all import-related expenses
- Arrange marine insurance cover for all consignments
- Ensure all shipments are adequately insured during transit
- Create and update purchase orders in line with procurement processes
- Maintain accurate records of all import transactions and documentation
Key Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Procurement, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field
- 2–4 years of experience in an import/export, logistics, or supply chain role
- Prior experience in the retail industry is an added advantage
- Strong understanding of importation processes, customs procedures, and supply chain operations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
