The Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, technology and Innovation (PAUSTI) prides itself as a postgraduate hub of research and innovation featuring a highly diverse faculty, and students drawn from whole of Africa.
PAUSTI which is hosted at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Nairobi, Kenya, opened its doors to the pioneer students in November 2012. The inaugural cohort graduated in record time in November 2014.
The Institute is mandated to produce leaders and innovators in the fields of Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology; Civil Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Mechatronic Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

JOB SUMMARY

PAUSTI is seeking to engage the services of Laboratory Cleaner Part Time Individual Service Provider for a period of Twelve (12) months renewable, based on availability of funding and satisfactory performance.Qualifications- Minimum of a Secondary School CertificateGeneral Work Experience- At least 3 years of relevant experience in Experience in cleaning laboratory, hospital, or research environments will be an added advantage.- Previous working experience in African Union working environment and higher educational institutionwill have an added advantage- Experience in an academic or research environment is preferred.- Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and hygiene practices is desirable.Skills & Competences- High level of cleanliness and attention to detail.- Knowledge of hygiene and sanitation procedures.- Ability to follow instructions and safety guidelines strictly.- Integrity, reliability, and good time management skills.Language Requirement:- Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of other working languages (French, Portuguese, and Kiswahili & Arabic) of the African Union is an added advantage.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the of the Director of PAUSTI, the Laboratory Cleaner shall be responsible formaintaining a clean, safe, sterile, and well-organized Molecular Biology Laboratory in accordance with institutional bio safety standards and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).Main Duties and Responsibilities- Dusting and cleaning of laboratory benches, workstations, and non-sensitive equipment surfaces.- Cleaning of floors, windows, walls, doors, and sinks within the laboratory..- Ensure laboratory surfaces are cleaned using appropriate disinfectants.- Maintain general cleanliness and orderliness of the laboratory at all times.- Clean common areas such as preparation rooms and storage areas attached to the laboratory..- Ensure sterilization of glassware and reusable plastic ware using autoclaves or other approved sterilization methods.- Properly dry, store, and organize sterilized materials in designated storage areas..- Assist in decontamination of laboratory surfaces before and after practical sessions where required.- Ensure cleaning materials used do not interfere with molecular biology experiments (e.g., avoidcontamination risks)- Ensure adherence to laboratory safety guidelines at all times.- Support safe disposal of laboratory waste, including(Biological waste, Liquid waste, Chemical waste,Sharps).- Ensure waste is segregated according to institutional bio safety protocols.- Assist in preparation of waste for autoclaving and final disposal.- Report any unsafe conditions or spills immediately to the Laboratory Technologist or Supervisor.- Ensure laboratory consumables related to cleaning (soap, disinfectants, tissue, waste bags) areadequately stocked..- Monitor cleanliness of refrigerators, freezers (external surfaces), and storage cabinets.- Support preparation of laboratory space before and after practical sessions.- Immediately report any damage, leakage, or malfunction observed in the laboratory.- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.- Follow bio safety and bio security procedures strictly.- Maintain confidentiality and integrity within the laboratory environment.- Avoid interference with ongoing experiments and sensitive laboratory processes. - Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Technologist, Programme Coordinator,or designated Supervisor.
