Job Summary
The Lead Engineer - Renewable Energy Expert will be responsible for overseeing and managing the entire lifecycle of renewable energy projects, from technical design and procurement to compliance, installation, and post-installation optimization. The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of renewable energy systems (solar, wind, and other clean energy technologies), the engineering processes involved, procurement strategies, key industry terminologies, and the various compliance and financial aspects of setting up and maintaining renewable energy projects.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Engineering
• Develop detailed renewable energy system designs for large-scale projects (solar farms, wind farms, etc.).
• This includes site assessments, system sizing, determining component layout, calculating energy output, and selecting appropriate equipment such as solar panels, wind turbines, inverters, batteries, and other components.
• Understand and apply engineering principles to solve challenges related to energy efficiency, system integration, and grid connectivity.
Procurement & Equipment Management
• Manage the procurement process for all necessary equipment, including solar panels, wind turbines, inverters, mounting structures, and energy storage systems.
• This involves selecting suppliers, evaluating product specifications, negotiating contracts, and ensuring timely delivery.
• Stay informed about the latest renewable energy technology advancements and recommend suitable products to meet project requirements.
Compliance & Documentation
• Oversee the preparation and submission of all compliance documents required for project approvals and permits, including environmental impact assessments, utility interconnection applications, and local building code adherence.
• Ensure that all renewable energy installations comply with national and international standards (e.g., IEC, UL, NEC), industry certifications, and local regulations.
Key Terminologies & Industry Knowledge
Stay proficient in key renewable energy terminology and technical jargon, such as:
• PV (Photovoltaic) Systems
• Wind Turbine Technology (Horizontal vs. Vertical Axis)
• Inverters (Central vs. String Inverters)
• Balance of System (BOS)
• Net Metering and Feed-in Tariffs (FiTs)
• Solar Irradiance and Efficiency / Wind Resource Assessment
• AC vs. DC Power Conversion
• Capacity Factor and Availability
• LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy)
Ensure accurate and effective communication with internal teams, clients, and contractors by clearly conveying complex technical terms.
Exclusions & Risk Management
• Identify potential exclusions or limitations in project scope, such as site conditions, permitting challenges, weather variability, or unexpected utility company delays.
• Provide solutions to mitigate risks and avoid project scope creep.
• Advise clients on exclusions from warranties or maintenance contracts, as well as any contingencies in project agreements.
Operations & Performance Monitoring
• Oversee the operational phase of renewable energy projects, ensuring all systems are functioning as expected.
• This includes the monitoring and analysis of energy generation data, identifying underperforming systems, and troubleshooting technical issues.
• Make recommendations for system optimizations and upgrades based on performance metrics.
Financial & Cost Management
Manage the financial aspects of renewable energy projects, including:
• Understanding the total cost of ownership, including installation, maintenance, and energy storage.
• Analyzing financial models, such as payback periods, ROI, and LCOE.
• Estimating operating costs, insurance, and warranties.
• Communicating with stakeholders about ongoing operational costs and long-term savings.
• Evaluating potential for incentives, grants, tax credits, and other financial subsidies.
• Preparing and presenting cost analysis reports for clients and stakeholders.
Client Education & Project Communication
• Provide clients with a clear understanding of the project timeline, the engineering processes involved, expected costs, and potential savings.
• Address client inquiries about renewable energy technology, financial incentives, and long-term benefits of clean energy.
• Ensure transparency throughout the project lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
Educational Background
• Bachelor's degree in Renewable Energy, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• A Master's degree or further specialization in renewable energy (solar, wind, or energy storage) is a plus.
Professional Experience
• At least 5 years of experience in the renewable energy industry, with a proven track record in project design, procurement, and project management.
• Experience with large-scale renewable energy projects (over 1MW for solar or comparable scale for wind) is highly preferred.
Technical Expertise
• Advanced knowledge of renewable energy system components (solar PV, wind turbines, energy storage), engineering principles, and integration with grid systems.
• Proficiency in using design software (e.g., Helioscope, PVsyst, AutoCAD for solar; WAsP, WindPRO for wind).
• Experience with energy modeling and performance analysis tools.
Regulatory and Compliance Knowledge
• Understanding of local and international regulations affecting renewable energy installations, including grid interconnection requirements, permitting processes, and environmental guidelines.
• Familiarity with industry standards such as NEC (National Electric Grid Code), IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), and relevant wind energy standards, is required.
Procurement and Financial Acumen
• Experience with the procurement process for renewable energy projects, including cost analysis, vendor selection, and contract negotiation.
• Knowledge of financial modeling related to renewable energy projects, such as LCOE, ROI, and financing options (e.g., PPA, lease agreements).
Key Competencies
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage teams and coordinate cross-functional collaboration.
• Excellent communication skills to effectively convey technical information to clients, stakeholders, and non-technical personnel.
• A proactive problem-solver who can manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
