Kenyatta National Hospital Projects under the Medical Research Department are seeking to recruit enthusiastic and proactive individuals with experience in qualitative Research Work.


Post: Qualitative Researchers (20 positions)

Location: 10 in Kisumu, Homabay and Siaya Counties & 10 in Nairobi/Kiambu Counties


Engagement Duration: 2 years


Contract type: While we seek to engage the Qualitative researchers for approximately 2 years, this will be a fee for service position where each researcher will be paid per work done (piecework) and at agreed upon rates.
 


Scope of Work: The work will include conducting in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, data analysis and report generation


Job Summary: The Qualitative Researcher will be responsible for conducting Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), key informants interviews, demographic surveys, transcription & translation after interviews and data analysis. They will also be required to ensure participants are consented before taking part in the study.


Academic Qualifications


Must have a minimum of a Diploma in either Public Health, Nursing, translation & interpretation or other related field from a recognized university


Competencies



  • Knowledge in qualitative data collection strategies
  • Knowledge in qualitative data analysis and presentation
  • Knowledge in qualitative data transcription and translation procedures
  • Ability to develop data management structures
  • Atleast two (2) years’ experience in conducting qualitative research studies
  • Knowledge in computer softwares used to analyze qualitative data e.g. NVivo, ATLAS ti, Dedoose as well as basic computer applications including Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to translate and transcribe interviews and focus groups
  • Must have experience in REDCAP
  • Be fluent in English and Swahili (oral and written), and English, Swahili and Luo (oral and written), for Qualitative Researchers in Kisumu/Homabay/Siaya counties; and have the ability to facilitate interviews and group discussions in these languages.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, including the ability to maintain frequent contact using cell phone, email, and internet-based phone (i.e. Zoom).
  • Ability to monitor, gather and evaluate information of broad scope and complexity
  • Interest in working in an innovative and demanding environment, with extensive travel to rural sites.
  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and work with others to resolve challenges.
  • Ability to follow-up on tasks and follow through on deadlines are critical skills in this position
  • Must have a valid certificate in Human Subjects Protection


Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Coordinate and Conduct qualitative research study activities including the recruitment, consenting, screening, and data collection according to the study protocol, standard operating procedures and principles of ethical research and in accordance to human subjects review protocols.
  • Translate and transcribe interviews and focus groups
  • Develop the codebook and review already developed codebook
  • Enter demographic information into REDCap
  • Conduct and audio record interviews and focus groups
  • Write detailed notes and memos for each study interview or focus group completed and complete the debrief report
  • Conducting in-depth interviews and focus group discussions of study participants and key informants at the study sites.
  • Manage financial resources with support from Study staff.
  • Provide weekly reports on the qualitative study progress and regularly communicate with the Study Coordinator
  • Qualitative data analysis
  • Provide completed debrief report providing detailed information about the interview, including overall impressions and major views or considerations, in Microsoft word document format and completed within 24 hours of the interview
  • Other duties as specified by the Project investigators and project-specific Scope of Work.


 


 


 


Translators Job Description


The Kenyatta National Hospital Projects under the Medical Research Department are seeking to recruit enthusiastic and proactive individuals with experience in translation of health research work.


Post: Translators (5 positions –At least 3 Must be fluent in Luo)


Engagement Duration: 2 years


Contract type: While we seek to engage the Translators for approximately 2 years, this will be a fee for service position where each researcher will be paid per work done (piecework) and at agreed upon rates.


Job Summary: The role entails translating documents from one language to another: Ability to read material and rewrite material in specified language or languages, following established rules pertaining to factors, such as word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.


Academic Qualifications


Must have a diploma or a Bachelor’s Degree in interpretation, translation, linguistics or in any other relevant degree


Competencies



  • Must be fluent in English and Swahili (oral and written): fluency in Luo (oral and written) will be an added advantage
  • Must have at least 1 year experience in translation in English, Swahili and/or Luo
  • Must be Computer literate with proficiency in MS Word and excellent typing skills is required for this position
  • Demonstrate flexibility, initiative and willingness to learn new skills


Responsibilities



  • Provide written communication solutions in both Luo, English and Kiswahili
  • Proofread, edit and revise translated materials
  • Translate document simultaneously or consecutively into specified language and maintaining message content, context and style as much as possible
  • Identify and resolve conflicts related to the meaning of words, concepts, practices or behaviors
  • Be familiar with colloquial expression currently in use within Kenyan Kiswahili, particularly within informal settlements
  • Provide consecutive interpretation when required
