Job descriptions & requirements

Job Title: Site Accountant
Reports To: Senior Accountant — Parent Company
Direct Report(s): Site Junior Accountant
Functional Line (Solid): Senior Accountant — Parent Company Head Office, Nairobi
Operational Line (Dotted): Site Manager — Client, For Attendance, Rosters, Site Priorities and Hse
Location: West Pokot Mine Site
Gross Salary: Ksh 100,000 – 130,000
Our client, a mining company that is part of a larger investment group, is looking to hire a Site Accountant and operates the West Pokot Mine Site. As production scales, so does the financial exposure on site: casual labour payrolls, fuel issued to a growing fleet, consumables and stores, local supplier invoices, contractor claims, imprest and petty cash — every day, every shift. The volume and the risk have outgrown a single transactional role. The client needs a qualified accountant on the ground who owns site finance end to end.
The Site Accountant is that person. The role is the most senior finance practitioner resident at the mine, reporting functionally to the Senior Accountant at the parent company's Head Office and supervising the Site Junior Accountant.
Where the Site Junior Accountant processes, records and verifies, the Site Accountant reviews, reconciles, challenges and reports. The role is the bridge between what actually happens on site and what Head Office reports to the CFO, the Board, KRA and the external auditors — and the integrity of that bridge rests on this role.
Mine-site finance fails in predictable places: casual labour rolls that include people who did not work, fuel that is issued but never reaches an engine, stores that leave the warehouse without a requisition, and invoices paid for goods that were never delivered.
The Site Accountant is expected to know these risks better than anyone on site and to close them through disciplined, documented controls — not through goodwill or trust. Segregation of duties is non-negotiable: the Site Accountant verifies, reconciles and recommends; payment authority sits with the approvers named in the client's Delegation of Authority.
The client's values — Safety, Teamwork, Professionalism, and Cost Consciousness — carries extra weight in this role because the Site Accountant sets the financial tone on site. Operational pressure to 'just pay it' will be constant.
The Site Accountant must hold the line courteously, firmly and in writing. Any manipulation of records, collusion with suppliers or staff, or concealment of a known discrepancy will be treated as gross misconduct.
Near-term priorities include:

  • Taking ownership of the site finance function within the first 30 days — reviewing every open reconciliation, petty cash and imprest balance, and supplier account, and clearing any backlog;
  • Introducing a weekly casual labour validation routine with Site HR, reconciling attendance and biometric records to the payment worksheet before anything is submitted to Head Office;
  • Establishing monthly fuel and stores reconciliations against equipment hours, logbooks and requisitions, with variances investigated and reported;
  • Delivering a complete, reviewed month-end site pack to the Senior Accountant by Working Day 3 every month; and
  • Coaching the Site Junior Accountant to a fully independent, audit-ready standard.

Role Purpose: To own the accuracy, control and timely reporting of all financial activity at the West Pokot Mine Site — safeguarding site cash, fuel, stores and payroll inputs; enforcing the client's financial controls at the point of spend; supervising the Site Junior Accountant; and delivering reliable, reviewed site financial information to the Senior Accountant so that the client's books are complete, compliant and audit-ready at all times. The Site Accountant is the client's senior line of financial control on site and is personally accountable for the integrity of the site finance function.
