ABOUT THE COMPANY

Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi is the oldest hospital in Kenya. Founded in 1901 with a bed capacity of 40 as the Native Civil hospital, it was renamed the King George VI in 1952. At that time the settler community were served by the nearby European Hospital (now Nairobi Hospital). It was renamed Kenyatta National Hospital — after Jomo Kenyatta — following independence from the British. It is currently the largest referral and teaching hospital in the country.

JOB SUMMARY

Qualifications and ExperienceMaster in any of the following disciplines; Midwifery, Medical Surgical Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Oncology and Palliative Care Nursing, Forensic Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Nursing Education, Nursing Management, Geriatric Nursing, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution;Bachelor’ of Science in Nursing or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;Registration Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya;Valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya;Leadership/Management course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;Proficiency in Computer Applications; andAt least eight (8) years cumulative work experience with at least three (3) years in a supervisory position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Unit LeadershipProvide daily Update to the Director, Nursing Services on departments work performance;Arrange, conduct and attend divisional and inter-departmental meetings and conferences;Provide guidance to nurses on proper documentation and reporting;Participate in disciplinary process for employees in the department;Enhance inter-professional collaboration and team work within the department;Organize regular clinical/nursing rounds within the department.Patient satisfaction and Quality Patient CareResponsible for organizing, planning and implementing nursing services by applying nursing process and nursing model in the department;Coordinate implementation of patient service delivery charters;Provide support and guidance to unit heads in patient care and unit management;.Promote a culture of dignity and respect within the nursing personnel, patients and relatives.Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes in the department;Coordinate implementation of evidence-based nursing to enhance patient centered professional care approach;Promote occupational health initiatives to ensure safe and healthy environment conducive for patient care;Coordinate regular customer care audits in the department; and.Advocate for timely clinical interventions and safe care for all patients.Operational EfficiencySupervise rationalization of nursing staffing in the department with optimal 24 hourly coverage;Implement divisional nursing related projects and programs;Develop performance work targets for unit heads and conduct bi annual appraisals within the department;Ensure enforcement of infection prevention standards adherence in the department;Member of the departmental credit committee, departmental disciplinary committee;Ensure effective functionality of nursing equipments and supplies within the department;Conduct bi-annual clinical audits and address areas of improvement appropriately;Conduct quarterly audits on compliance with the service delivery charter;Ensure proper utilization of equipment and supplies and conduct regular checks on medicine and dangerous drug registers to ensure proper maintenance;Participate in revenue generation initiatives and budget projections in the department.Capacity building, learning and growthCoordinates training programs in the department;Identify and facilitates guidance and counseling of staff and students;Plan, organize and facilitate continuous education programs for staffs.Facilitate nursing research, dissemination and implementation of the findings in the department;Compile the annual training projections and prioritize implementation for the department as per the approved budget
