Job descriptions & requirements

Company Background

Strong Start is a growing social enterprise providing early-childhood education, caregiver training, and family support services across Nairobi.

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Finance Manager to take ownership of our day-to-day financial management and ensure that leadership has an accurate and timely understanding of the organisation’s financial position.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Finance Manager will oversee the accounts, cash flow, financial reporting, revenue controls, payables, payroll inputs, and client accounts. The successful candidate must be comfortable moving between financial oversight and the practical work required to keep the accounts accurate and up to date.

This is a part-time, in-house, leadership role suited to an experienced finance professional who can independently manage the finance function within a growing organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Financial management and reporting

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date financial records
  • Prepare monthly management reports, including profit and loss, cash flow, receivables, payables, and budget-versus-actual performance
  • Monitor Strong Start’s financial position and highlight risks, discrepancies, or emerging concerns to the Managing Director
  • Track income and expenditure across programmes and locations
  • Support annual budgeting and maintain practical cash-flow forecasts
  • Provide financial information to support management planning and decision-making

Revenue and client accounts

  • Oversee invoicing, payment allocation, receipts, customer balances, and collections
  • Ensure that revenue is accurately recorded and reconciled across programmes and payment channels
  • Reconcile registration, package, attendance, invoice, and payment information
  • Monitor outstanding balances and follow up consistently on overdue accounts
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in customer accounts
  • Respond professionally to parent billing and payment queries by phone, WhatsApp, and email

Payments, reconciliations, and controls

  • Complete regular bank, M-Pesa, and other payment-channel reconciliations
  • Review supplier invoices, expenses, payment schedules, and supporting documentation
  • Prepare payroll information and ensure staff-related payments are accurately recorded
  • Maintain appropriate financial controls and organised supporting records
  • Ensure finance processes and recurring reports are completed within agreed timelines
  • Recommend practical improvements to financial systems and processes

Compliance and coordination

  • Prepare accurate financial schedules and documentation for statutory filings, audits, and year-end reporting
  • Coordinate with the company’s external accountant, auditor, and other financial service providers
  • Work closely with programme, operations, and teaching teams to ensure that financial information is complete and accurate
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when handling company, employee, and customer financial information

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field
  • CPA qualification or progress toward a recognised professional accounting qualification is preferred
  • At least four years of relevant accounting or financial-management experience
  • Experience preparing management reports, budgets, cash-flow forecasts, and reconciliations
  • Sound knowledge of bookkeeping, payroll, financial controls, and statutory requirements
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills
  • Experience using accounting software; familiarity with Zoho Books or a similar system is an advantage
  • Experience working in a growing SME, education business, social enterprise, or multi-location organisation is an advantage

Skills and Attributes

  • High integrity, discretion, and accountability
  • Able to take ownership of an organisation’s accounts with limited supervision
  • Strong financial judgement, analytical ability, and attention to detail
  • Able to identify issues, investigate discrepancies, and recommend solutions
  • Highly organised and consistent in meeting recurring deadlines
  • Comfortable carrying out detailed accounting work as well as preparing management-level reports
  • Able to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues
  • Strong customer-service and communication skills
  • Confident handling sensitive payment conversations professionally and firmly
  • Comfortable working in a growing and fast-paced organisation
  • Fluent in spoken and written English; Kiswahili proficiency is required

Work Requirements

This is an in-house role and is not suitable for someone seeking fully or predominantly remote work.

The successful candidate must be available for a consistent part-time schedule across the working week to provide continuity, timely reporting, and regular coordination with management and programme teams.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
