The Waste Kiosk Operator manages the Pipeline, Nairobi plastic buy-back kiosk. This role drives sustainability through efficient collection, accurate data, and community engagement. As the face of the enterprise, they ensure transparent transactions and transform plastic waste into a reliable commodity through expert daily operations.
Job descriptions & requirements
A. Collection and Transactions (The Core Task)
- Plastic Procurement: Purchase plastic waste (primarily PET, HDPE, and LDPE) from community suppliers (individuals, collectors) using clear pricing based on weight and material type.
- Quality Control: Inspect all incoming plastic to ensure it is clean, dry, and correctly sorted before purchase.
- Payment Management: Execute instant payments via M-Pesa or cash, ensuring accurate payment records for every transaction.
- Weighing and Sorting: Operate and calibrate the industrial weighing scale daily. Ensure collected plastic is categorized correctly for storage.
B. Kiosk Management and Logistics
- Inventory Management: Manage the daily inventory of collected plastic, recording inbound and outbound volumes.
- Baling and Storage: Operate the compaction/baling tools to prepare waste for efficient transport. Ensure the Kiosk storage area is organized, clean, and secure.
- Recycler Handover: Coordinate with the logistics team/recycler for scheduled weekly collection and loading of baled materials.
C. Data, Reporting, and Community Engagement
- Meticulous Record-Keeping: Maintain daily logs of all transactions, including supplier details, plastic type, weight, and price paid, using the provided computer/mobile phone.
- Sustainability Tracking: Assist Project Oversight in tracking key metrics (O2 and O3) to validate the project’s sustainability goals.
- Community Relations: Serve as the primary point of contact for the community. Provide clear information on accepted materials, current prices, and the environmental benefits of recycling.
- Kiosk Maintenance: Ensure the Kiosk remains presentable and professional at all times.
3. Qualifications and Experience Required
- Experience: Proven experience (1+ years) in retail, inventory management, or operating a small business/kiosk, preferably in a high-density urban environment.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in using a mobile phone for M-Pesa transactions and basic data entry (Excel, forms, or similar logging software).
- Numerical Aptitude: High degree of accuracy with cash handling, calculating weights, and applying price rates.
- Language: Fluency in Swahili and English.
