The Safeguarding and Welfare Office is responsible for promoting and maintaining the physical, emotional, social, spiritual and mental well-being of our children, their families, employees within the organisation and community members we serve. This role involves early identification of welfare issues, provision of psychosocial support, and coordination of services to ensure that each individual in our care has the opportunity to thrive in a safe, nurturing, productive and love-affirming environment.

The role also involves collaborating with, building, nurturing and strengthening relationships between the school, parents, and the community to foster an environment of love, accountability, and hope, thus promoting dignity and transformation at home and in the community.

Roles And Responsibilities

Child Welfare & Safeguarding:

  • Monitor and assess the well-being of children regularly, identifying those at risk due to abuse, neglect, malnutrition, trauma, or other vulnerabilities and coordinate timely intervention.
  • Respond to and document safeguarding concerns promptly and in accordance with child protection, safeguarding and organisational policies.
  • Provide basic counselling and trauma-informed care, and refer complex cases to professional services or partnering agencies.
  • Maintain detailed, confidential records on child welfare case files, incident reports, follow-up actions and reporting logs in the organisation’s system.
  • Address barriers to learning such as hunger, illness, absenteeism, disabilities, resources or behavioural issues.
  • Coordinate feeding programs, school supplies, and access to health care in partnership with other staff and external partners.
  • Organise and support children’s holistic development by facilitating Bible-based life skills sessions, mentorship programs, or small group discipleship.
  • Advocate for the rights and needs of children within the community, school, and relevant agencies.
  • Monitor the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of children through regular interactions, teacher reports, and field visits.
  • Coordinate with teachers and school leaders to identify children facing hardship, including hunger, absenteeism, chronic illness, or behavioural challenges.
  • Coordinate and support the implementation of school feeding programs, uniform distribution, health screenings, and hygiene initiatives.

Family & Community Engagement:

  • Conduct home visits to assess living conditions, engage caregivers, and provide outreach support or referrals as needed.
  • Build trusting relationships with families, offering practical advice, prayer support, and encouragement aligned with the organisation’s Christian values.
  • Organise parent workshops on topics such as child protection, hygiene, discipline, and spiritual growth in the home.
  • Build trusting relationships with families, guardians, and caregivers to strengthen the home-school connection and encourage parental involvement in their child’s everyday life.
  • Facilitate community awareness sessions on parenting, child rights, health, and protection.
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with caregivers, offering support grounded in biblical values.
  • Facilitate family-based interventions or referrals to local services (e.g., health clinics, government programs, churches, or shelters).

Staff & Program Collaboration:

  • Work closely with teachers, pastoral care team, and school leadership to identify and address welfare needs.
  • Support teachers and program staff in identifying and responding to children’s behavioural, emotional, or social issues.
  • Provide basic psychosocial support and referrals to specialised services where needed (e.g., medical, counselling).
  • Collaborate with the spiritual development team to ensure children’s holistic formation (mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual).
  • Act as the primary point of contact for employee welfare concerns, grievances, and well-being issues.
  • Provide counselling or support to employees dealing with personal or work-related issues.
  • Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct regular welfare inspections and assessments to identify risks or issues.
  • Coordinate with management, Human Resources and external professionals (e.g., counsellors, medical personnel) to support employee welfare.
  • Promote mental health and wellbeing initiatives, including workshops and wellness programs.
  • Assist with return-to-work programs for employees following illness, injury, or extended leave.
  • Maintain confidential records of welfare-related matters and report trends to management.

Policy & Collaboration:

  • Ensure compliance with all child protection laws and organisational protocols, including vetting and background checks for those working with children.
  • Participate in child safeguarding committees and contribute to the development of policies and protocols.
  • Assist in crisis response planning (e.g., for abuse disclosures, family displacement, or health emergencies).
  • Participate in child safeguarding committees and contribute to policy updates.
  • Collaborate with churches, community leaders, NGOs, and government officials to extend the reach of welfare support.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor employee welfare policies and programs.
  • Lead or assist in the design and delivery of life skills, health education, and faith-based values programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Child Protection, or a related field.
  • 2 years experience in social work, case management, community outreach, and crisis intervention.
  • Strong understanding of local child welfare policies, procedures, and available resources.
  • Proficiency in English and Kiswahili; knowledge of additional local languages is an advantage.
  • Possession of a valid Certificate of Good Conduct.

Key Competencies and Skills

  • In-depth understanding of child welfare, mental health, and family engagement practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with the capacity to relate effectively to children, families, sponsors, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven advocacy skills, particularly in child protection and family support.
  • Competence in digital data entry, record keeping, and use of data management tools.
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and emotionally resilient in working with vulnerable individuals and families.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability in all professional engagements.
  • Culturally and spiritually sensitive, with the ability to uphold and model the organisation’s Christian values in both conduct and communication.
  • Skilled in counselling, conflict resolution, and teamwork; able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Willingness to travel to field locations and engage directly with communities.
  • A mature and active Christian faith, demonstrated through service and a willingness to pray with students and families.

Work Environment:

  • The role involves both office and field-based work, including regular home visits and community outreach in challenging environments.
  • Flexibility in working hours may be required, including occasional evenings or weekends for emergency support or organisation activities.
  • Must be comfortable working in difficult or unsanitary conditions and engaging with highly vulnerable individuals.
