The Clerk of Works (CoW) shall act as the Client’s independent on-site quality representative, responsible for continuous inspection and monitoring of construction works to ensure full compliance with approved drawings, specifications, contract requirements, and acceptable workmanship standards.

POSITION: CLERK OF WORKS1. Role Summary
The Clerk of Works (CoW) shall act as the Client’s independent on-site quality representative, responsible for continuous inspection and monitoring of construction works to ensure full compliance with approved drawings, specifications, contract requirements, and acceptable workmanship standards.
The role is advisory and quality-focused and complements—but does not replace—the Consultant Team.
2. Academic & Technical Qualifications (Target Standard)
The candidate must possess a Diploma or Degree in one of the following disciplines:
Building Construction
Construction Management
Civil Engineering
Architecture / Architectural Technology
Technical Competence
Strong ability to read and interpret:
Architectural drawings
Structural drawings
MEP coordination drawings
3. Professional Experience (Critical Requirement)Minimum 3 years hands-on site experience on building projectsDemonstrated experience on:Multi-storey residential or mixed-use developments (5+ floors)Projects of similar scale, complexity, and valuePrevious roles may include:Clerk of WorksSenior Site EngineerConstruction Quality / QA Manager4. Quality & Workmanship Expertise
The Clerk of Works must demonstrate proven ability to:
Identify construction defects early, before works are covered
Enforce quality and workmanship standards diplomatically but firmly
Strong practical knowledge required in:
Concrete works and reinforcement detailing
Masonry works and finishes
Doors, windows, waterproofing, and roofing systems
Coordination and interfaces between:
Architectural works
Structural works
Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP) services
5. Contractual & Regulatory AwarenessPractical understanding of consultant-led contractsJBCC familiarity is strongly preferredKnowledge of and experience with:Kenyan Building RegulationsNational Construction Authority (NCA) compliance and inspectionsCounty government inspections and occupation certification processes6. Reporting & Communication
The role requires strong documentation and reporting capability, including:
Daily site inspection logs
Weekly quality and defect reports
Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) with clear photographic evidence
Communication Skills
Clear written and verbal communication
Ability to engage effectively with contractors, consultants, and the Client
7. Professional Registration (Strong Advantage)
Registration or membership with any of the following will be an added advantage:
Institute of Clerks of Works (ICW)
Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) – Technician or Graduate category
8. Contract Duration: 12 months (renewable subject to performance)Salary Range: KES 50,000 – 60,000 per month (gross), depending on experience and qualifications
