Background
Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HIH EA) is registered in Kenya as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). The organization started its operations in, focuses on poverty alleviation through sustainable enterprise development. Operating in 40 Kenyan counties since 2010, HIH EA supports marginalized communities, particularly smallholder farmers (80% women, 40% youth), to overcome poverty through entrepreneurship.
The Roots for Transformation project, launched in Bomet and Busia counties, builds on a 2020-2023 CERA pilot supported by the IKEA Foundation. The pilot trained 1,948 farmers, achieving significant progress in agro-ecology, including a 71% CAET score (indicating advanced agro-ecological transition), improved soil health (Soil Health Index from 3 to 3.9), adoption of 4-10 regenerative practices, and a 155% income increase. The new project targets 2,400 smallholder farmers (80% women) to transition to circular economy and regenerative agriculture practices.
Purpose of the assignment:
This assignment aims to finalize the CERA curriculum, develop training pocket guides, and conduct a
Training of Trainers (ToT) to enable HIH EA staff to deliver training, supporting smallholder farmers in transitioning to regenerative agriculture while increasing their incomes.
Objectives
1. Finalize the CERA curriculum based on HIH EA team feedback.
2. Develop training pocket guides to support trainers in delivering content to farmers with varying educational and technical backgrounds.
3. Conduct a 4-day ToT for up to 30 HIH EA staff in a common venue which will be in the Western part of Kenya.
Key Activities and Timeline
1. Finalization of CERA Curriculum
o Refine the curriculum based on HIH EA feedback to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
o Deliverable: Final digital print-Ready (soft copy) curriculum version.
2. Development of Pocket Guides (Mid-December 2025, ~5 days)
o Create concise pocket guides summarizing curriculum modules, including training
objectives, key content, trainer guidance, and references to the full curriculum.
o Develop supporting digital (soft copy) versions.
o Deliverables: Pocket guide manual, trainer materials.
3. Training of Trainers (ToT) (Early January 2026, ~4 days)
o Conduct a 3.5-day in-person training for up to 30 staff, covering curriculum content, session planning, delivery techniques, and use of pocket guides.
o HIH EA will manage venue and accommodation logistics; consultant to include travel and material costs in the proposal.
o Deliverable: Completed ToT.
4. Final Report (Mid-January 2026)
o Submit a comprehensive report summarizing the assignment outcomes.
Consultant Profile
- Proven experience in developing training curricula and materials for value chain-focused programs, including ToT delivery.
- Experience working with NGOs, academic institutions, or social enterprises, preferably in regenerative agriculture/agro-ecology.
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili; ability to deliver interactive, practical training.
- Commitment to HIH EA’s anti-corruption and safeguarding policies.

Budget and Payment
The consultant will provide a budget proposal separating professional fees and expenses. Payment terms will be negotiated during the contracting stage.
