Job Title: Transport Manager

Our client is looking to hire a Transport Manager who will be responsible for leading the company’s transport operations, encompassing internal trucks, the workshop, and outsourced transporters.
The role aims to ensure operational excellence, cost efficiency, and proactive capacity planning. It combines hands-on fleet supervision with strategic management of transporter partnerships, positioning the company as a trusted logistics provider within East Africa.
The Transport Manager will also be directly responsible for the Profit and Loss (P&L) performance of the Transport Department.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet & Transport Operations
- Oversee internal fleet operations, including dispatch, routing, monitoring, and post-trip debriefs.
- Ensure 100% compliance with Journey Management Plans (JMP), HSSEQ, and statutory requirements.
- Manage fuel allocation, route integrity, and driver performance to minimize operational losses.
- Enforce preventive maintenance schedules to reduce breakdowns and maximize fleet uptime.
Workshop Management
- Oversee workshop operations to ensure timely and cost-effective vehicle maintenance and repairs.
- Implement preventive maintenance programs and monitor spare parts inventory.
- Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and compliance standards in all workshop activities.
- Supervise workshop staff and external service providers to maintain high vehicle reliability and performance.
Outsourced Transporter Management
- Identify, contract, and manage reliable transport partners across regional corridors.
- Negotiate competitive rates while maintaining service, compliance, and safety standards.
- Maintain a dynamic pool of vetted transporters to support contingency and peak demand periods.
- Conduct quarterly performance evaluations of subcontractors based on timeliness, cost, and safety records.
Proactive Load & Market Planning
- Collaborate with commercial, consignment, and key account teams to forecast transport requirements.
- Secure forward capacity through both internal fleet scheduling and outsourced transport partnerships.
- Anticipate seasonal demand changes and design scalable capacity strategies.
- Reduce empty backhauls by leveraging market cargo and strategic alliances.
Client & Commercial Engagement
- Partner with Key Account Managers to secure repeat business and identify cross-selling opportunities.
- Provide capacity, costing, and efficiency insights to support tenders and proposals.
- Ensure clients receive accurate trip visibility, timely reports, and prompt resolution of escalations.
- Benchmark service delivery standards against industry leaders (e.g., J&J, Alistair, SAS).
Cost Control, P&L & Efficiency
- Oversee and manage the full Profit and Loss (P&L) of the Transport Department.
- Track and reduce cost-per-trip, cost-per-kilometer, and fuel variance through data-driven monitoring.
- Align financial controls (trip advances, reconciliations, vendor payments) with the company’s Delegation of Authority (DoA) and ERP system.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimize fleet utilization and reduce operational costs.
- Ensure the department meets revenue and profitability targets through efficient cost management and commercial growth.
Leadership & Governance
- Lead, coach, and manage fleet officers, workshop teams, drivers, and outsourced fleet coordinators.
- Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and safety across the transport department.
- Collaborate with Finance, HR, Customs, and Commercial teams to align transport operations with company objectives.
- Prepare and submit weekly and monthly performance reports to the COO/CEO and the Board.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Transport Management, Supply Chain, Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum 7years of progressive experience in transport, fleet management, logistics, or supply chain roles.
- Experience in fleet management in East Africa region will be an added advantage
- Professional certification in Transport, Fleet Management, HSSEQ, Supply Chain, or Mechanical Maintenance is an added advantage.
- Strong knowledge of logistics regulations, cross-border transport requirements, and HSSEQ compliance.
- Proficiency in fleet management systems, ERP platforms, GPS/telemetry tools, and route optimization software.
- Proven ability to manage logistics operations under pressure.
- Skilled in forecasting, planning, and securing transport capacity.
