We are seeking an experienced, highly-skilled, and motivated Workshop Manager to lead our busy workshop operations, ensuring efficiency, quality, and safety across multiple production streams.
Job Summary
The Workshop Manager will be the core operational leader for the Brookhill Projects workshop, directly overseeing and managing all production activities including carpentry, joinery, welding, metal fabrication, and concrete block production. The ideal candidate will possess robust technical expertise in these diverse fields, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to autonomously manage a demanding production schedule with minimal supervision. This role is critical to translating design specifications into high-quality finished products ready for site installation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Workshop Operations & Production Management
• Oversee and manage the end-to-end production process for all workshop streams: carpentry/joinery, welding/fabrication, and concrete block production.
• Plan, schedule, and allocate resources (manpower, machinery, materials) to ensure project deadlines and quality standards are consistently met.
• Interpret and translate technical drawings, blueprints, and design specifications into clear, actionable production plans for the workshop teams.
• Implement and optimise efficient workflow processes to maximise output and minimise waste, downtime, and rework.
• Manage inventory and stock control for raw materials (wood, steel, concrete aggregates, consumables), coordinating with the procurement team to ensure timely and costeffective resupply.
2. Quality Control and Technical Expertise
• Establish and enforce stringent quality control protocols across all manufacturing disciplines (carpentry, fabrication, block production).
• Conduct regular, hands-on inspection of work-in-progress and finished products to ensure they meet specified design, engineering, and quality standards.
• Provide expert technical guidance and support to workshop staff, troubleshooting complex technical and production issues across wood and metal works.
3. Leadership and Staff Management
• Lead, mentor, train, and supervise a multi-skilled team of carpenters, fabricators, welders, and production assistants.
• Foster a positive, productive, and collaborative work environment.
• Conduct performance reviews, manage attendance, and ensure all staff are adequately trained on equipment operation and safety procedures.
• Maintain a high level of performance and discipline with minimal supervision.
4. Health, Safety, and Maintenance
• Strictly enforce all Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols and regulations within the workshop.
• Ensure all staff are using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and following safe work methods.
• Manage the maintenance, repair, and optimal functioning of all workshop machinery, tools, and equipment (e.g., panel saws, welding equipment, concrete mixers, CNC machines if applicable).
• Conduct and document regular equipment checks, risk assessments, and tool-box talks.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience and Education:
• Minimum of 3+ years of demonstrable workshop management experience, preferably in a demanding design & build, construction, or high-volume wood manufacturing setup.
• Proven, hands-on experience in both wood manufacturing (carpentry/joinery) and metal fabrication (welding/steelworks).
• Experience overseeing or direct involvement in concrete product manufacturing (e.g., concrete blocks, precast elements) is highly desirable.
• Educational background in a related technical field (e.g., Engineering, Construction Management, Wood Technology, Mechanical Production, or relevant Trade Certification).
Skills and Competencies:
• Exceptional Leadership & Management: Ability to motivate a diverse team and manage workflow with minimal oversight.
• Technical Proficiency: Deep understanding of fabrication techniques in wood, steel, and concrete. Ability to read and interpret complex architectural/technical drawings.
