Career Opportunity: Legal Officer

Job Location: Eldama Ravine
Job Purpose: To provide legal advisory services to the SACCO; ensure compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements; manage legal, contractual, and litigation risks; support loan recovery and enforcement processes; and strengthen corporate governance in accordance with Kenyan laws and SASRA regulations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide legal advisory services to management and staff to reduce the likelihood of legal risk in SACCO operations, contracts, employment matters, and regulatory compliance.
- Draft, review, and vet contracts, memoranda of understanding (MOUs), loan agreements, guarantees, and other legal instruments.
- Handle litigation and dispute matters, including representing the SACCO in courts and tribunals, or liaising with external advocates where required.
- Manage loan recovery and enforcement processes, including issuance of demand and statutory notices and realization of securities.
- Ensure compliance with SASRA Regulations, the Co-operative Societies Act, the Data Protection Act, and all other applicable laws and regulations.
- Advise management on disciplinary processes, staff terminations, and labour disputes in compliance with the Employment Act, 2007.
- Support sound corporate governance through the development, review, and interpretation of board charters, policies, resolutions, and governance instruments.
- Maintain statutory registers and ensure timely filing of statutory returns, licences, and regulatory submissions.
- Conduct legal due diligence for partnerships, procurements, and investment transactions.
- Identify legal, regulatory, and compliance risks and recommend appropriate mitigation and control measures.
- Handle member complaints and support internal and external dispute resolution mechanisms.
- Facilitate training and awareness programmes for staff and Board members on legal, regulatory, and compliance matters.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of legal cases, contracts, and compliance obligations.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Management from time to time.
Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
- LLB degree, Advocate of the High Court of Kenya (valid practicing certificate), and LSK member in good standing.
- Minimum of 2β4 yearsβ post-admission experience, preferably in a SACCO, financial institution, or law firm handling commercial, recovery, or regulatory matters.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and litigation skills combined with advanced legal research and computer literacy.
- Strong analytical and risk-assessment capabilities focused on proactive problem-solving and meeting strict deadlines under pressure.
