About Mukuru Promotion Centre 

Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC) is a faith-based charitable organization supporting communities in the informal settlements of Mukuru, South B, Nairobi.  The Sisters of Mercy founded MPC in 1985 in response to the community challenges in the Mukuru Informal Settlements.  It is situated at the heart of the Industrial Area, along the New Likoni Road just 1 km off Mombasa Road and borders the Mukuru Kayaba Informal Settlement.   

 

MPC endeavors to empower the Mukuru community through education, health, welfare and social rehabilitation services.   

 

About Songa Mbele Na Masomo Children Centre:
Songa Mbele Na Masomo Children Centre supports children living with disabilities from Mukuru slums. The Centre admits children with various conditions, including Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Hydrocephalus, Down Syndrome, Ichthyosis, and Intellectual Disabilities, among others.

The Therapy Department consists of physiotherapists and Occupational therapists, serving over 60 children. We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Occupational Therapist to join our multidisciplinary team and provide specialized care to children with physical, developmental, and learning challenges.

Qualifications and Experience:

· Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy from Kenya Medical Training College or a recognised institution.

· At least five (5) years of relevant work experience assessing and evaluating physical disabilities caused by neurological disorders, diseases, or injuries.

· Registered with the Occupational Therapy Council of Kenya (OTCK).

· Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

Position Summary:
The Occupational Therapist will assess, plan, and implement therapy programs to enhance the functional independence, development, and well-being of children. The role involves collaboration with caregivers, families, social workers, teachers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated care and support.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

· Review children’s medical histories and observe performance in daily activities.

· Conduct comprehensive physical and psychological assessments.

· Develop individualized treatment plans with specific goals for each child.

· Advise and train on the use of adaptive equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, eating aids).

· Design and implement physical rehabilitation programs to help children regain lost skills.

· Demonstrate exercises and therapeutic activities to improve mobility, strength, and cognitive function.

· Educate caregivers and family members on proper child care and rehabilitation techniques.

· Assess and monitor child progress, documenting findings for collaboration with other healthcare providers.

· Evaluate home and school environments, recommending adjustments for improved functionality.

· Prepare children for reintegration into exit centres, schools, or home environments.

· Participate in the formulation of policies, procedures, and standards of care.

· Ensure effective utilization of medical equipment and supplies, minimizing waste and costs.

· Maintain professional knowledge and adhere to certification and regulatory requirements.

· Supervise volunteers and interns, providing orientation, allocating duties, and monitoring performance.

· Maintain confidentiality of all patient and child information.

· Undertake other duties assigned by the Head of Department relevant to the profession.

Additional Responsibilities:

· Teach patients and families about self-care interventions; demonstrate exercises to relieve pain in children with chronic conditions.

· Educate clients, families, and the community on preventing common musculoskeletal injuries.

· Build positive relationships with parents/caregivers of children.

· Collaborate with doctors for referrals, medical history, and recommendations for specialists.

· Attend training and professional development courses relevant to the field.

· Document patient medical progress, keep records up-to-date and securely stored.

· Conduct regular evaluations to monitor progress and advise the office when sourcing therapy equipment.

· Report to the Project Coordinator for guidance and support.

· Sensitize the community on physiotherapy and occupational therapy issues.
