United Nations and regional organizations; provides administrative and other support services to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat); provides joint and common services to other organizations of the United Nations system in Kenya, as applicable; and manages and implements the programmes of administration, conference services and public information and provides security and safety services for United Nations staff and facilities in the United Nations Office at Nairobi.

Summary

This position is located at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). The Project Engineer, Energy and Sustainability reports to the Chief, Design and Construction Section for the UNON Conference Upgrade project, Division of Administrative Services, UNON.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief, Design and Construction Section, the Engineer will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities: Applies commonly used engineering calculations, practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the design, construction, electrical power generation and distribution systems, environmental control systems, and other related structures and activities in the project. Plans, designs and submits for approval of the Chief, Design and Construction Section technical design drawings and specifications for projects. Conducts preliminary site investigations to obtain field data such as campus and city-wide power distribution and other data required for building site selection. Prepares design layout for smaller or less complex portions of buildings and facilities. Develops technical data regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, and quantities and costs to be incorporated in formal specifications. Reviews and approves weekly and monthly project reports from project design consultants and contractors. Liaises with other engineers and project specialists responsible for related specialized phases to arrive at mutually satisfactory approaches to problems by exchanging and comparing data. Conducts investigations to develop improved designs and construction techniques. Produces cost data and estimates on engineering-related requirements of current and planned project. Analyzes project proposals to ensure technical feasibility and to ensure that project objectives are attainable within prescribed resources. Undertakes energy mapping and master planning and feasibility studies through planning and up to construction phases. Models energy demands and low carbon solutions at large scale, with a view to targeting net zero carbon. Supports implementation of sustainability strategy and initiatives such as through energy efficiency improvements, smart building and construction innovations, renewable energy solutions, biodiversity improvements. Leads collection, analysis and reporting of energy efficiency and sustainability data and creates policies, procedures and SOPs as required. Conducts research on development of new technical systems and follow development to identify improved methods and equipment. Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Performs other related duties as required.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in engineering, architecture or related fields is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree in the specified fields of studies. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or related area related to large-scale construction or renovation projects is required. Experience related to Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and/or green building rating systems is desirable. Two years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
