Accounts & Bookkeeping Assistant
Job summary
We're an early-stage startup with real money moving through the platform — across multiple payment providers, mobile money channels, and currencies. We need someone who can bring order and accuracy to our books from the start, not fix a mess later. This is a part-time or contract engagement, ideal for an experienced freelance bookkeeper who works with multiple clients and can slot us in. You'll work independently, report to the founders, and be trusted to flag what matters.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Keep our books clean and current — daily transaction recording across all income and expense lines

- Reconcile bank accounts and mobile money statements including M-Pesa, Flutterwave, and Paystack
- Process and track invoices, receipts, and expense claims
- Produce concise monthly financial reports — P&L and cash flow — that founders can actually read and act on
- Handle KRA compliance: VAT filings, PAYE, and any other applicable obligations – Coordinate with our external accountant or auditors when required
- Keep digital records organised, confidential, and audit-ready from day one
WHAT YOU BRING
- CPA Part 2 or above, or a Diploma/Degree in Accounting or Finance
- 1–3 years of bookkeeping experience — startup or SME background strongly preferred over large-corporate experience
- Hands-on proficiency in QuickBooks, Wave, or Xero — you should be able to hit the ground running
- Solid grasp of Kenyan tax law: KRA, VAT, and PAYE compliance
- Practical experience reconciling digital payment platforms — Flutterwave, Paystack, and M-Pesa specifically
- High integrity and discretion — you'll have access to sensitive financial data – Comfortable working async and remotely with minimal hand-holding
- Cryptocurrency accounting knowledge is a meaningful plus
